If ABS DWV pipe isn’t supposed to be in the sun, how do you use it for a vent? Is painting the part above the roof acceptable? Or do you connect a steel nipple for the exposed part?
What do you guys do in new construction?
thanks.

Few people understand it. Nobody agrees what it is, how to learn about it, or who's responsible for it. It has never been more important

It is common practice to install it through the roof, unpainted. It would be better practice to paint it or transition to metal pipe. Especially in snow country, you should take vents to near the ridge before bringing them outside. So there is less sliding snow trying to snap off a cold (and therefore brittle) and UV-exposed (and therefore brittle) length of plastic pipe. -David
*You have to flash it any way , why not use a lead stack flashing . It will completly cover the plastic pipe ,I used one on my PVC pipe so I didn't have that ugly white pipe sticking through my roof look.
*I have had inspectors ask that it be painted, so this is apparently acceptable. None have asked for anything more, but not all inspectors seem to care.
