Yesterday I added a few ceiling cans to a room. Replaced an ugly fixture and then added a couple more in the same cavity defined by the floor joists, floor, and drywall. Easy work. My question is, is it OK to just fish the romex through the bays (so that the wire is no doubt sitting on top of the drywall) and make my connections, or do those wires have to be fastened to the joists? Or should I be useing armored cable if I can’t fasten those wire to the joists?

While a few locations don't allow the use of NM (romex) the code does allow it.
And while the general requirement is to staple up the romex there are excepts allowed for rewiring such as this.
Thanks Bill. yes my jurisdiction allows romex. I'm just always a little paranoid about not doing something right. Part of its a fear of geting blamied by, say, my insurance company, in the event of an "event." Part of it is just wantng to do it right.
Exactly what Bill said -- fishing is OK for remodels.
