Adding cieling over sheet rock

| Posted in General Discussion on June 2, 2000 01:11am

I am putting white pine siding in our girls room. I have stripped the sheet rock off the walls, but don’t want to pull down the ceiling if it can be avoided. The room is 12 by 15 with the 2×6 joists (on 16 inch centers) running the 15 foot span. I also have a 22 pound ceiling fan in the middle of the room.

My plan is to screw in the sheet rock with 1.75 inch sheet rock screws (it is sagging just a tad from the nails coming loose), then use liquid nails to glue the 1 by 8 inch white pine to the ceiling, then use 2.5 inch nails to nail the pine into the joists.

My only uncertainty in this is the span’s bearing capacity. Will the extra 420 lbs of white pine on the ceiling cause any stress on the joists in the future. That comes to about 2.3 lbs/ft2. I think not, but don’t know how to find any emperical proof for my assumption.

Can anyone out there tell me how to find out? Or supply the answer?

Thanks

Kent - I assume that the 2 x 6 joists that you refer to are flat ceiling joists with nothing but attic loads above.

Rather than deal with load calculations, why don't you consider running a new strongback across the top of the ceiling joists before adding the pine? In case you're not familiar with the term, it's a vertical 2 x (I'd say 2 x 6 here) nailed to a horizontal 2 x 6 or 2 x 8 run perpendicular to the joists and then screwed/glued to the tops of the joists. If you think the ceiling is sagging a bit now, you can prop the center of the span up a bit (not jacked, just wedged) before you add the strongback. The idea is to reduce deflection at the center, and it's relatively cheap insurance.

If you are talking about horizontal bevel siding, have fun hanging the pictures! PS If they are anything close to teenage I'd build in a large permanent bulletin board and enforce it or you'll have Back Street Boys, NSync, Sugar Ray, etc. taped all over your siding. Anyone posting here with teenage girls knows
    i exactly
what I mean. Don't forget the phone jacks, stereo speakers, etc. Don't think I'm kidding. The latest term I just learned is

*Kent, I just ran some quick numbers assuming #2 Hem-fir. If you've got about 5 psf more due to other stuff (insulation, the 2x6's, etc) along with your 2.3 psf, the joists will only deflect 1/480 and be loaded at only 19% of their design strength. DH

Thanks for the advice! Since the girls are the ones ripping out the old walls and currently staining the new wood, I'll hope they take a bit more care with the walls, knowing what it will take to redo their work!

Great dialog overall; you made my first post to this forum a memorable one.

    Later...
