adding pics that show up in your post

Gumshoe | Posted in General Discussion on February 5, 2005 03:04am

Several posters have asked about this, so I thought I’d explain, as best I can. I know there are plenty of others who know a lot more about this than I do. But this is how I do it, anyway.

I write my message in Notepad, or MS Word. Then, on the BreakTime thread I click “reply” and “attach files,” and I attach whatever pic I want to add (I use jpg format). Then I type something, anything (or it won’t let me “preview” without something typed in.) Then I click “preview” and when I see the little yellow link, I click it. If the pic shows up good, then I back-screen, and highlight the title on the yellow link, and right-click on it.

I get a little gray pop-up menu, and I scroll down to the bottom of that menu, and click “properties”. I get another little gray pop-up box called “Element Properties” with an IP Address (http://blahdedahdeda). I highlight that address, and I right-click copy it.

Then I go to my message, in Notepad or MS Word, and at the end of my message I add this little bit of html: <IMG src=”http://blahdedahdeda” (that IP address I copied earlier) />

Then I go back to my message, and add <br /><br /> after each paragraph. Now the whole package is complete, so I highlight the whole thing, and right-click copy it.

Now back to the BreakTime forum. I back-screen out of my reply, until I’m back to the original post that I’m replying to. I click reply, and right-click paste the message I built. Then I scroll down and click the box for HTML tags in the message. Then I click “Preview” and if everything shows up OK, I click “Post!”

It sounds more complicated than it really is, once you get used to it. I hope I explained everything clearly, let me know if it works for you!

yeah, I eliminate that by back-screening all the way to the original post that I'm replying to, and then starting over from scratch - after I've already uploaded the pic.

Check out this roof - it's stacked! (I hijacked somebody's picture! - Proof that someone out there - I won't mention any names - is one rafter shy of a roof!)

Hahahaha  That's my pic!!  and I'm not one rafter short of a roof, I'm one fry short of a happy meal!!

That is where the over framing started.  I'm so flattered you used my pic :-)

I do basically the same thing you do.

But when I preview a message, I right-click on the image link and pick "Copy Image location"

Then I hit the "revise button, go back to the post, and paste the URL for the picture in like you said.

If blinking only takes a fraction of a second, how are the majority of people able to capture someone doing it at least twice on a 24 picture roll of film?

Just a reminder: don't put big pics or lots of pics in your messages with this technique. The people on dialup would really prefer to decide for themselves whether or not to wait for your pictures to load.

Same with slow loading web pages. Even with DSL I sometimes wait for a minute or more while somebody's included web page loads from a slow server. If I hit <ESC> to abort it, then the messages after the slow one sometimes don't get loaded. Much better to post a link.

Yeah, that did occur to me. And another irritating thing - I don't have the software to reduce my pics (on my computer), or if you can do it with paintbox, I haven't figured it out yet! So ya have to be discriminating. And another thing - does anyone know if you can go back and delete pics from past posts?

      1. UncleDunc | Feb 05, 2005 06:11am | #11

        >> ... does anyone know if you can go back and delete pics from past posts?Yes, but there's no very compelling reason to do so. The picture attaching process still talks about a personal space quota, but they don't enforce it anymore. Disk space is cheap and rapidly getting cheaper.

I just named our third Golden retriever puppy "Huck" (He is our third and a pup from our first)

Hope you are not offended! I think he bears a proud and nobel name!

No offense taken. (I've got a metal stick with a spring on it named after you!)

    >>se jpg format). Then I type something, anything (or it won't let me "preview" without something typed in.) Then I click "preview" and when I see the little yellow link, I click it. If the pic shows up good, then I<<

    Stop right there !!!

Now, right click inside the picture itself.

Choose "copy image location", as Boss Hog suggested in another post...

Now, just backtrack and make your post as usual. (Using the code to put the pic in, of course.) No need for all those extra steps...

BTW, the <br /> <br /> is even more typing than you need to do.

Type <p> at the beginning of the second paragraph.

Now copy it and paste it at the beginning of every subsequent paragraph.

Don't worry about the </p>'s at the ends of paragraphs. The software here doesn't need those...

The person you offend today, may have been your best friend tomorrow

    1. Gumshoe | Feb 05, 2005 10:12am | #15

OK, I'm going to try a test sample here, to see if I'm getting this.

Hey, pretty cool! Thanks! (but I still don't like that pesky little yellow post-it note).

      1. rez | Feb 05, 2005 08:14pm | #18

ya, but you got the icon along with it.
