A client/friend needs back exterior door replaced and would like side lights to bring more light into dark area of house. She’s on a budget and so I was considering building the side lights on site, using glass block, and adding them to a prehung exterior door. My question is if I use 3/4 jambs for the side lights will I have enough strength & thickness for the hinge screws and dead bolt throw? Should I run a stud between the door and side light? Any other considerations in site-building side lights?
