Additional insulation, 50 year old house

Our 50 year old house is 26′ x 40′ in plan and has a 6 on 12 pitch roof with wood louvers in each gable end. The attic over the living space only has 2″ or 3″ of fiberglass batts running in between the 2″ x 6″ ties. How much insulation should I add and how should I do it? I assume I should add some soffit vents and proper vents. The house is located in the Adirondacks of NY State.
Comments on the pros and cons of blow in versus fiberglass wold be helpful.

I did not find information about sliding glass door that would fit in a 7' space at the site that you suggested. Did I do something wrong? We would like vinyl (white) on the outside and wood (look) on the inside. Do you know of anyone who makes 7' doors like this?
Thanks for your help
Huh?

If there's no bat/mouse/rat dung in the fiberglass, it can be left in place.
-Airseal at the ceiling level- all wiring, lighting, plumbing and chimney penetrations, dropped ceilings in closets, open tops of interior walls, if any.
-Install a quiet bathroom fan (100 cfm) that vents to the exterior , not into the soffit. Control it by hand crank or electronic timer
-On each side, install 10-12 vent troughs (truvent, raftermate) from the soffit to over the final height/depth of insulation.
-Build retaining wall around attic hatch to stop loose fill from falling.
-Blow R40 cellulose insulation over fiberglass for a total of approx R50 (don't worry, it'll be worth it in the future, even this winter) (After 28 years in the energy conservation industry including teaching, litigation and writing government regulations, I believe cellulose is the only product to use in residential ceilings)
-Weatherstrip & insulate attic hatch
