What equipment do you prefer/have, or routinely rent for backfilling foundations?
Tractor w/boxblade? Backhoe? Front End Loader? Day labor?
Do you tamp by hand, plate or jumping jack, or not at all?

Skim-coating with joint compound covers texture, renews old drywall and plaster, and leaves smooth surfaces ready to paint.

That's the best idea I've heard of yet, buying your wife a tractor for the anniversary! What do you say--Honey, look what followed me home, it's a John Deere 3450! Cool, huh? Now we can dig that pond and haul all those trees you wanted me to cut down, yeeha!
But, won't that kinda keep you further from hitchin' up to Alaska and other dreams?
I can't wait to see if you pull this off!
MD
*By the way, you haven't priced a backhoe, have you?
*H9i guy9s,Scott ain't going to AK Scott9.Hope you guys are doing well.jd
*Buy a bobcat.
*I agree, for a good all around machine buy a Bobcat!...it's the best for all around work and has all kinds of attachments to rent if you don't use them very often and a kid can run one with a little practice. Other than that the other machine are all specialty machines that all have their own niche. A 4wd tractor gets around better in the mud but won't do everything a bobcat will. Trust me, I've got tractors, a backhoe, dozers, bobcat, etc.And if you can get away with it as an anniversary present, Good luck!John
*Hey allI actually have my wife giving me reasons why I should buy a tractor. I guess I made the most out of that psychology course:) (she says I'm soo cheap I won't buy anything anyways)I am thinking of a compact 4wd tractor to bushhog the property, improve the road(loader and box blade), and generally tear *ss around the yard. I might occasionally use it for work (we do some SMALL slabs for machinery foundations). Since I'm cheap, I was wondering if I could suppliment its existance by doing some backfill and rough grading. Basements are few and far between here, so backfill is "lite"Bobcat® has got to be the most fun per dollars machine out there. I love it every time I rent one, but the main household chore is bushhoggin' the back property and scraping the road. A TLB will d*mm sure dig/backfill the best, but no mow. Now a Kubota® B21 is a miniture TLB, with a quick detatch backhoe, a 3pt. hitch, and a standard PTO for the bushhog. The problem with it is that the payments will be over $400 a month, so it HAS to earn some of its keep. Oh well, thanks for listening while I rambleScott Oh yeah, I figure If the urge hits, I can put the tractor on a trailer and head my present 2wd truck up the ALCAN highway :)
