Additions to Framing a Staircase article
After reading the article( http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/pages/h00164.asp ) and looking at the pictorial article I would like to add my two cents.
- Step 6- Layout
- Layout bottom of stringer allowing for finished tread or subtread. This needs to be cut from bottom to achieve proper riser height (Make sure to look at floor finishes as well)
- Layout top of stringer plumb cut to allow for finished risers or sub risers. These must be cut from back of stringer if no riser is being added to floor headout
- Step 19- Template
- Mark template or pattern. Leave lines while cutting on additional stringers. Template will be used as center stringer.
- Step 23- Installing stringers
- Use construction adhesive to install stringers (cheap insurance). Save template/ pattern for center installation. Center stringer should be slightly smaller (Thickness of pencil lines).
- Step 28- Installing center stringer
- After center stringer installation. Install blocking between stringers at subfloor @ bottom riser and stringer to upper floor headout. This ties the stringers together. Position these blocks to allow risers and treads to be nailed to them.
- Step 31- Installing treads
- The stringers have a tendency to move as the fresh cuts dry out. If stairs are to be carpeted or tiled I install subtreads and risers immediately. If they are to be finished in wood I install the temporary treads as shown but use screws to allow for removal when installing finishes.
Hope these additions help.
