I am trying to find an affordable material for a finish/final fascia around my roof on my house and am coming up short. I’m hoping I’m missing something obvious!
Right now, the house has a sub-fascia made of builder-grade 2x10s. It’s functional, but it looks like the rough framing that it is. I want to put a layer of “appearance grade” (read: flat with square edges) 1×12 or 2×12 material over it. I’d need just over 160 ft of it and hopefully in 16 ft or 20 ft sections, to reduce the number of joints.
I got a quote from a local yard for a surfaced 2×12 option but that’s running $75/ft so my tiny house would run $600-$700 just for a pretty fascia! I was hoping to spend half of that or give-or-take $2/ft.
Actual kiln dried DF 2x12s around here (Phoenix, AZ) can be had in that price range. I’ve never seen a 2×12 that hasn’t cupped, though… but maybe if I rip them all down the center; flip one side around and re-glue, and then run them through a planer I might get a roughly 1″ thick flat board?
Or heck, spend hours finding quarter-sawn 2x6s; run then through a jointer; glue them together; plane them flat? That would also be in the $2.30/ft range.
I can get 1×12 primed MDF boards locally for $1.50/ft, so the price is right. That’s twice as many joints as I’d prefer, though, and I am very leery of using MDF (even painted) as an exterior trim. But is that my only viable option?
What do y’all think? Have I driven myself loopy? Is there an option I’m missing that would work well?

Home depot has some primed 1x12 pine boards at ~50$ / 16ft
Would that work? Mdf might not last long...
I do like working with primed FJ boards due to their stability but even if I would pay $3.20/ft (a tad high), I live in a wood desert in addition to a literal desert and so there is no Home Depot without 100 miles that carries it... and no, they won't deliver it, either.
HD does have 1x12x12 "whitewood common boards" for $2.66/ft which isn't terrible... but I would rather it be in 16' or 20' lengths at that price.
In other searches, I did see a few composite options like "MiraTec" but the prices I do see put it in the $3/ft category and I'm not sure I could get it locally, anyway.
Aah I didn't think about that. It seems to be a standard stock item here in the northeast, just bought some at my local HD and got similar stuff from Lowe's too. But if you are in the desert maybe the MDF won't be too bad - I was thinking it wouldn't last a winter but you may not have this problem.
Good luck
could always do aluminum trim stock and wrap it, having suggested that, I have no idea about cost, & you would need a "brake" to bend it to fit properly
other thought is to contact a company like Winsor or a similar company and see if they'll ship/deliver
good luck
