I had central air installed in a closet near our living. Unfortunately, it makes a bit more noise then I thought it would– especially now since we have a newborn in the house. There is about 5 inches on either side. Is it possible to put some type of sound barrier there w/out affecting the A/C. I looked into polyurethane foam but the stuff is pretty pricey. Would attic insulation work? If so, would rating? Any potential problems? Thanks for the time.

You have to make sure you are still getting enough air to the condensor, no matter what you do. Polyurathane is too expensive... what is your price range here?

Hope you mean evaporator coil. Condenser units are normally outside, unless it is a GSHP.

JLC did an article on retro fitting for noise reduction, Do a search of their web site archives.
A couple of things come to mind. Try decoupling the airhandler unit from the house by setting it on isolastion pads, cork or rubber. Add a flex coupling to the supply and return air ducts to isolate them from the ahu vibrations.
Adding sound blankets to the inside of the closet will also help, but they are pricey. There is a source for them in the JLC article. We hung some in a elevator eguipment room to reduce noise in an adjacent conference /assembly room. They work, but I'll warn you, they are heavey in large sizes.

I hope you mean the air handler for the AC and not the condenser. The condenser should be outdoors. Did you consider putting the air handler in the attic?
