While I have used some MDF before (hated the crown), I have to trim a basement with it.
Never done casing before. What do I do instead of pin nailing mitered corners? Any other hints?
Not looking forward to this.

Any risk of water in the basement? If so, don't use MDF.
I hear ya. But the customer already bought it.I was not happy.I used MDF sheets cut to panels for my last wainscoting job. But I don't like the trim.Glenn
haven't used a lot of MDF trim. I assume you are worried about blow-outs or splits on your mitred corners??
Do you have mitre clamps- such as the ones from Collins Tool Company??
You could glue and clamp the corners, but I would think an 18 ga. brad wouldn't do too much damage in a corner.
Is this for your parents? Yer milkin' that job LOL
I'd seal the trim on all sides at least a foot or so up. I glue the miters with the Titebond molding glue, and hold them together with Collins clamps until the glue sets.
Wise ####. Nice star there, sheriff. NAh, it's a job a friend of mine recommended me to trim. I really don't want it because of the MDF, and because I priced it too low for my speed, or lack thereof.Glenn
i glue both pieces, "fingering" the glue into each. it soaks up alot otherwise. the most stable thing is your drywall, mdf does shrink and move alot in basements, so i put PL onto the drywall where the joint is, so both pieces are glued to the wall.
preassemble each one if possible, i use the collins clamps, pin the corners, dabs of glue behind the joints. works for me.

i pretty much do them the same though i skip pinning (I find it flakes way too much and don't have a 23 ga pinner.) and also use the small spring miter clamps to do outside corners on base. The stuff is cheap and copes nice.
ADD: DO NOT FORGET DUST COLLECTION. I just hook up the vac to my scms.

If you don't have the spring clamps, blue masking tape.
Short mitered pieces put miter to miter on bench face up and tape.
Turn assembly over and apply glue to miters.
Roll up miters and glue to drywall with proper spacers at bottom if needed.
For MDF crown I have found a hot glue gun works real well, especialy with 3 piece, 22 1/2 deg. bullnosed outside miters. you can assemble small returns and corners on the bench ,then match up high. You have to work quick though,it sets up fast!
