I need help and tips on using an aluminum brake. I may need to do some work with one on a up and coming job although I have no experience with one. Any tips, information, etc… would be greatly appriciated. Thanks

If you bend vinyl trim you might want to overbend it a bit as the vinyl trim doesnt hold the bend as well as aluminum.
Use test scraps and then use the test piece as your template for repeated pieces. Make the marks on the test piece (about a 6" piece).....bend it, and if its right then cut a small piece off of that (about an inch)....put your pencil marks in all the bent creases you made....straighten out the piece flat.....now you have a template piece you can hold up to the coil and use as your marking piece....no more measuring for that piece...use the bent piece as an eyeball piece for you bends.

I bought(kinda)a coil of the vinyl to trim the shop garage doors with. The aluminum gets banged and dinged terribly. I bent some jamb trim and so far, 3 months have gone by and it is wearing like iron. I know it's been out for a long time, but I'm just getting around to trying it. Okay so I lied. The rep stopped and gave me a coil to try. If I like it , he'll stock it. If not, he'll make it a special order.
what is the name of a good vinyl trim brand and how does it come (rolled, sheets, etc...)
Vic
Any brand of vinyl coil I used was the same quality as far as I could tell. It comes in rolls from 12" wide to 24" wide by 25-50 feet long. It comes in rolls. Its a lot more forgiving then aluminum but as I've said in another post....I like to overbend a just a little so that it keeps its shape.

for a wrap job...of say...1x6
which would be 3/4 x 5 1/2 x 3/4.........
mark the 5 1/2 part about an 8th wider.....because you'll lose some width when ya bend. I've seen lotsa guys refuse to make the metal a hair loose.....and if you stretch it tight and nail it off....it's gonna wrinkle.
Over bend and under bend to help yourself out.....on that example.....overbend the 3/4's so the trim stays put w/o nails....then nail it off......and don't sink them tight.
Best advice is rent one for a day ...before you have to use it.....get some cheap coils stock...and play. I think Tapco has tips and ideas on their website. You can do alot with a break....

Clean brake
Wooden rule
Malco shears
sharp pencil
Sharp razor knife
The basics you need.
If you cut your alum. while its in the brake start at one end and stop in the center. Repeat from the opposite side. If you cut straight across you cut the hinge on the brake and repeatedly doing this will damage your machine. And if you haven't bought it yet, get the center lock type those sidewinders while cheaper are for the birds.
if you're going to do a lot of flashing , invest in a slitter.. really speeds production and you won't be cutting up your brake hinges...Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
