My Mothers subdivision is replacing the exterior lights that are on the porches and garages. The lights are painted cast alunimum. I was given them. and have most of them torn apart and all the alunimum parts are seperated. I will have about 80 light fixtures. I am guessing at least 200lbs of cast Alunimum. How much should I get at the scrap yard for these parts?
thanks

I think they are paying 25 cents a lb. here in Maine
One of my guys is saving his. Says price has been drifting lower, around 22 cents. He picks old lawn mowers with cast AL chassis out of the dump to sell the AL scrap.I let him have the lead and CU scrap off out jobs, and the occasional AL

Is the demand for AL falling? I would think with economy picking up, that there would be more demand from producers. Isnt AL cheaper to recycle than to make from raw materials?
I hadn't heard that the economy was picking up, but the US economy is now a fairly small part of what drives commodities pricing. And scrapers/junk dealers are slow to respond to the smaller moves in prices. Typically about 1/3 to 2/5 of the world spot price for a refined metal.True AL is expensive to cull from ore

problem with recylcling AL is that most is an alloy and they can never get the recyc material back to true AL, can't separate the alloy additives to get back to pure AL so the recyc product is always a weaker version of what they started with. Steel on the other hand separates quite nicely and they can make higher value products from the recyc material.

That is true but the price of all scrap is down, we have a long way to go before it hits the high prices again.

It's hard to time the market. If it were me, I get rid of junk as soon as it collects. The money you make could be invested in something else that might very well increase faster than aluminum scrap will. Gee, even a CD will go up 2 to 3% a year.
