It amazes me to the kind of workmanship that is going on in a house that we are working on. We normally do remodeling, but the owner of a new, $250,000 home in the construction process, she wanted us to install 5″ oak plank flooring. That stuff is a pain in the butt. Anyhow, the quality of work we do as remodelers is very much superior to the crap they have done to this new house being built. The main problem I have seen is the drywall, a vision impaired person could see this crap on the wall. Also white kitchen cabinets all marked up. electrician forgot where he ran a wire in an exterior wall, pryed off the siding, used 4″ hole sawtill he found them. No prob. but in prying off the siding he cracked it and put holes in it, and just put it back without saying anything. SAD…
We talked to the owner about it and said thats what you get with paying $85 / sq ft. and not $120. Apparently these people have no consciounce sp? Doesnt matter, should be done right !!!!!!!!!!!

It's common. There's poor work being done all over the place. Doesn't matter how much the house costs.
*Todd,I agree. Should be done right.......however......at least the home owner knows that she gets what she gets at $85 Sqft. Most of them want $250 Sqft quality at $85 prices. Sound like you need to be in a different market. I think this kind of comment belongs in the Tavern.Ed. Williams
*Hey, quit hanging around my job sites. My rockers don't call it "rape ,tape ,blow and go" for nothing. Can't see it from my bank anyway.
*How does one installing flooring know what the electritian is doing to the siding, or the quality of the drywall?? Someone has too much time to critisize and not enough time to work on what they are supposed to be getting paid to do.
*Yeah, what are you doing paying attention anyway? Just keep looking down at the floor.

You guys wonder why I am noticing this stuff, Because we remodel, " make other peoples sh-t look good! Maybe if all I did was wood flooring I wouldn't notice this crap. But, seeing how we do drywall, plumbing , flooring, electrical, etc. etc. etc. I just notice this stuff.......

hey todd... just think of all the work they're creating for us remodelers .
.((rubbing hands together gleefully)))
b .....it's an ill wind that blows nobody good
*Plumbing? Electrical? Flooring? Drywall? Guttering?Sewering? Siding? Sewing? Rowing? Standing? Soldering? and all those things. Never did trust someone who says they do it all and better than anyone else.
*5" Oak plank a pain in the butt? Sounds like a gravy job. Sure beats installing 2 1/4" strip! Mad Dog is right I see it all over including one lately whereby the kitchen cabinet dude installed his cabinets 1 and 1/4" off the concrete subfloor. So in comes the travertine tile guy and his floor suddenly becomes 1 7/8" where it meets my 3/8" engineered floor down the hallway into another area of the house.I've had to use plywood in the past to build up subfloors but this one was ridiculous. According to many this cabinet dude knew what he was doing and it was the way things were done...yea right. Doors all over the house had to be cut, subfloors sloped so that outside doors could be opened...you name it..it had to be done. This home was above $1 mil, unfortunately the owner/contractor was in a big rush to get in. Btw it was struck by lightening while I was working in it. Hit the coupulo(sp)...crash kabammn! Roofing tiles rained down on the driveway. A small piece of plywood was driven through a HVAC duct and through the drywall. The house was and is still cursed in my opinion. What a nightmare!
*Ken, you've been on my job? The travertine floor I'm setting has to be built-up just like you describe because the, ahem, professional cab installers screwed up. Of course there's a wood floor abutting the tile. These consensus is the wood floor guy and I can work it out. My share of this extra is going over $400, this for a 270 sf floor.
*Rich:I guess I don't feel alone and the owner footed the bill for all the proper subfloor adjustments in one area whereby I had 3/4" and 1/2" cdx piled on top another but a balcony door would not open with that, so part of the area had to be sloped with Mapei. Real nice woman/contractor(bro in law has the license) and pleasant to work with. But there was a dining area that met the travertine in two areas but she didn't want to spend another $500 or so to get the height up to near par with it.So I had to custom mill some wild looking sloping reducers to match the prefinished r/o floor. Oh well she was happy BUT an extra $500 on a home that's valued in excess of $1M? Go figure..I wouldn't want to trip over those transitions. And the freakin' painters! I had HW in the upstairs MBR and I caught them using a step ladder that was missing one rubber foot, so one metal leg was exposed. I caught it and warned them before they caused any damage. BUT, a few days later the same ladder was being used downstairs w/o any improvements.. I was pissed and threw the freakin' thing out the front door. Kill the attitude the painter says. I replied..."Just trying to save you money dude..and throw that piece of crap in the dumpster." All kinds in so called fine homebuilding and alot has to do with demand and lack of skilled people.
*
here's where it should really get interesting. lack of skilled people? you get what you pay for. in MT contractors like $10 hr guys to gangbang a project up and if they are conscientious, have a more expensive mop-up guy come in and fix it. by the the time it is done quick and wrong, and then fixed, you are not saving any money. one doesn't have to be slow to get it done right. there are a ton of guys who don't want to be on their own, but can't or won't stoop to being a gangbanger. some home owners, and some contractors, don't value quality, it just isn't an issue. bad carpentry continues because it is tolerated/rewarded.

I think it all started with the infamous Supreme Court decision in '64 banning school prayer.
