When I bought my new construction home at the end of 2000, I was pleased to see American Standard on all of the bathroom fixtures. Within a couple of years, I found myself calling the manufacturer about a problem in which the float mechanisms were failing.
They did the right cusstomer service in my book and replaced all filler float controls with proven older mechanisms. They sent them to me, and I installed them. Good resolution. Now, I have two of four toilets exhibiting a problem in which water is draining into the bowl and stopping at the flapper lip. I tried a variety of readily available replacements and all to no resolution.
Once again, I called the manufacturer and stated I followed their troubleshooting direction to conclude what the problem should be, but this time they could not provide me with the replacement part even if I was willing to pay for them (obviously, I was). Well, after much trouble with plumbing supply houses either not having the part of wanting an absurd amount, I learned the big box could oder them for 1/2 to 1/3 the cost from someone else.
Ok, with multiple genuine american standard parts arrived, I installed them, but the problem persists–just not to the extent for the leakage rate. I made a point to use a clean terricloth rag to clean the flapper seat, but this doesn’t help. In the end, the water drains to the flapper lip and the remaining below that sits there to evaporate (oh the humanity).
Ideas? About to just replace the toilets altogether and stop fussing with this.

i'm not sure if this will help, but i had one stump me a few months back.same thing kept losing water, now as far as i'm concerned theres only one place for water to go if it's not dripping on the floor and thats through the flapper.
so i replace the flapper 3 times, different brands etc. no luck.
turned out that the plastic overflow tube had a leak where it joined the flapper assembly.so it was leaking thru the overflow and bypassing the flapper.bad news is you have to tear the tank off and replace the intire assembly.
i have rentals so fixing toliets are my hobby!! larry

Exactly which A.S. toilets are you talking about? If these are the Champion series there is a known problem with older flush towers. The seal lip was too thin and came away from the tower, replacement towers had a thicker seal lip.
When I called them about it, they sent me out new flush towers, no problems since.

Going by what American Standard told me to look for, they are the 4112 tanks.
That is the Cadet model then. I have no knowledge of that line, sorry. Love the Champions though.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

Strange, American Standard told me the part number was 738358-0070A, which I have since ordered, received, and installed to no benefit. I have found the follow Adobe PDF parts file and there isn't even a 738358 part number on it. Maybe they changed the part number.
I now ownder if it is the valve assembly (part 733360-0070A). Any thoughts?
It could have changed, or you could have the parts list for the 4112.500 or the 4112.809 RH tank. Post the other file you have.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

That is the only file I had. The part number for which I ordered, received, and installed the ineffective part was something verbally told to me by American Standard on the telephone.
I guess I'd just call them back and try again. I called A.S. twice with my flush tower problems (I had multiple A.S. toilets that needed the fix), and I had no problems with their customer service. I got the part I needed within a week.
Dealing with rentals is a different story though. I know the Cadet is their low end model, if you were to replace it I'd suggest the Champion. Unfortunatly you're probably feeling a little burned by A.S. at the moment. Sorry.
The Champion is a great toilet that doesn't clog, I don't know if that is reason enough to stay with A.S. for you though.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

Parents had American Standard in their 20 year old house. Throughout their history there was nothing but problems. Leaking, at flapper, leaking at fill valve etc. Took two of them out last year and replaced with Toto's. they couldn't be more pleased.
