The structural engineer and architect for our project have recommended that a 2-2″ x10″ ledger be attached to the masonry block using 5/8″ Hilti sleeve anchors at 16″ on center as part of our deck and portion construction. While 2″ x 10″ structural supports will be attached to these ledgers, the deck and porch will primarily rest on separate footings (i.e., separate from the footings supporting the house) which range in dimension from 12″ to 24″.
Our contractor is concerned that the Hilti sleeve anchors will rip out of the block or that the ledger will not continue in its proper place.
b Has anyone had any experience (positive or negative) with Hilti sleeve anchors or the equivalent in a similar application? Any recommendations here?

Hi Tony,
Nothing wrong with Hilti Sleeve Anchors in concrete, but I do have a problem with them in hollow masonry blocks.
If your blocks are filled, my vote goes with the Architect and Engineer.
If your blocks are hollow, my vote goes with your builder and would use bolts long enough to pass through the block and into the basement and through a 2x plate on the opposite side.

Thanks, Gabe.
I believe that some of the masonry blocks in question are filled (i.e., the cores are filled to make a solid cement pier), while others are not filled and hence are hollow, depending on where they are located on the plan. (We had a need for cement piers in some locations due to use of steel I-beams for support in certain locations of the project).
Any other thoughts you or others have on this would be welcome.

This has been discussed recent -- in response to my question and that of others. I agree that the anchors into solid material should be fine, but not hollow CMUs. If you're not sure, check with the engineer who spec'd them!
If you can avoid attaching to the building altogether, go ahead and do so.

Thanks. I will check the other messages about this.
One issue we may have which others might not is that there is a roof which extends above the porch which continues over the house itself. Thus, there is some concern I believe (perhaps misplaced, I do not know) about the porch and deck settling or moving differently from the house if the deck and porch are not attached at all.
This may not be of significance given that the deck and porch are, for the most part, supported by their own footings anyway -- in effect supported by their footings and not really at all (or only to a minimum) by the ledgers attached to the house.
Does this make sense? Any comments?
