Has anyone out there solved the problem that afflicts my window operators (brand new windows in a brand new house) – the very sloppily engineered gearing results in a completely unconstrained movement at the free end of each 24in. sash of at least 2in. and 2 and a half inches at the free end of our one 30 in. sash.
Even in mildly windy conditions (we very rarely get a calm day here on the UK Atlantic coast) with the windows open, this free movement results in an infuriating ‘flapping’ of the sash producing an unacceptable noise (and danger to tiny fingers on tiny new people). So far our only solution has been to stuff rolled socks into each sash (no need for screens here).
Help! Does anyone know of a properly engineered replacement operator without the huge amount of play – or has anyone found a solution that is better thsan rolled socks?
(Andersen have been paid – they just don’t want to know)
Thanks.

Sorry I can't help you but I do agree they are junk and have been for as long as I can remember!
If the noise given off by a window flapping in the breeze is enough to set you off.... You may need to take a good long hard look at life. Crank it in a few notches and worry about something else.... gheesh.
i think the tiny fingers of the tiny (new) people are a bigger concern than the noise.

Stupid hurts.... It's the law.
do you have tiny (new) people?
k
if the windows aren't completely open, does the flapping stop?
k
They flap over the whole range other than open and closed.
Thanks for your response.
trevallas... i've been using andersen casements for about 30 years... unless the crank mechanism is stripped, i've never seen the type of play you are describing
Thanks for your response Mike.
There is approx 105 degrees of free movement on the crank - as though there is no contact between worm and cog - there is no movement in the actual corrosion resistant hinge linkage - all the movement is from within the 'drive box'. I have 9 windows in the house and 11 operators, all are exactly the same. I have examined the 'drive boxes' and they are all riveted and therefore realistically inaccessible. If they have stripped threads it happened before they arrived here - but it has often been suggested that we were sent a 'dud' batch.
We have a completely unhelpful importer in the UK - the local agent is just 7 miles away and can't be bothered to come out and examine the problem! That is why I appealed for help via this forum in the hope of being able to find a replacement operating mechanism.
Any help will be gratefully received - thanks again.
not sure exactly what model / age windows you have.... but a lot of original equipment hardware is available from Blaine Hdw

I'm just alittle confused here.
How about....2 of them are double casement units???
Aahh let him be. I think he must have an issue with Brits.

When you open or close the casement sash do you have to exert a lot of cranking effort?

You can order parts directly from Andersen.
Try http://www.andersen.com or 1-888-888-7020.
Have the window glass sizes and hinge designation available.
