I have just picked up another deck project. This one will be another 2 teared deck only this one will be coming off the Master bedroom. This first level will be built to support a large hot tub. The second level will lead to the above ground pool.
My question is “what is the best way to finish a deck around an above ground pool? Having never done one, I am eager to hear your ideas.
Thanks,
Dave

what do you mean finish. Use cedar and you're finished.
You talking about railings or sealer or what?
Oh, and figure out how to use IRFANVIEW...lol

Yes' I figure out IrfanView, thank you.
When I say finish I was refering to how to finish the deck against the above ground pool. (above the lip, below the lip, or some other method I am not aware of)
What looks best?
I apologize, I should have clarified that.
Dave
If it were me I'd go above the pool and over it. I'd just be sure I could get the pool out if I ever had to. A round trim would look really nice against the butt ends but obviously cost a whole lot more than letting the butt ends die out.
If I were to just let the butt ends die out I'd take my router and put a real nice route around the edges.
If you wanted...for less money being its easier. you could resaw some cedar to about 3/8"-1/2" and bend that easily around the butt ends and round over that edge...or not.

That was the plan. I think I will be setting the hieght of the deck to allow removal of the liner as well. I'm really glad I took the time to post this question. Once again you guys have saved me a great deal of aggravation.
Thanks

"Finish"??? What does that word mean?
Depends how that pool is done now - if totally finished and detailed....The few I worked to were raw gunnite when I adressed the top

....."raw gunnite" ???????????????
What's that?
Uncooked gunnite.

I still don't know what it is. Please explain.
Thanks

Very Cool, how would I use it for this application?
Dave
DD,You wouldn't use the gunite. It is used to build in-ground swimming pools. I think Piffin was saying that he had to build the deck before the finishing materials had been applied to the raw gunite shell of the pool. It is a different way of doing a pool from what it sounds like you are dealing with.Bill
Gunnite is the concrete product used to form up most in ground pools. It is the structural unit. Then it is plastered smooth on the inside, maybe tiled around the top several inches, and capped on top of the wall with whatever. The whatever is where you are adressing it. If the pool is already finished with tile on that top surface, things would be different than if it is unfinished gunnite.

Now I get. Thanks. Not an issue hear as I am dealing with an above ground pool.
Thanks

Several things to consider with an above ground.
Access to the pump and strainer/skimmer assembly need to be simultaneously available for maintenance and coordination of the automatic pool cleaner hoses.
Considerations for the removal and replacement of the liner. Some liners require the top cap to be removed and the liner lapped and capped over the perimeter sidewall.
If you build over the cap with decking and finish the removal of the top pans is obviously a large PITA.
I have an above ground 18x52 "oval' in the ground and the surrounds vary from a large sandstone patio to a ship lapped tappered walkway down one of the straight sides of the oval. The balance is lanscaped and there is a pump pit that is a rock walled depression.
Both pool top levels set at the exterior edge of the pool cap and at an ~1-1/2" below the top surface. This works well as a sideband and tactile safety zone. For ladders and etc. the added surface is a better anchor than the pool caps.

Also, consider access -- pool steps, etc. You want to be consistent with them, just like a stairway.

Access to the skimmer had already been considered. I will be doing an access panel through the top of the deck.
Removal of the liner is something that hadn't occurred to me or anyone else for that matter. I will take that into consideration when I am setting the deck hieght.
Your pool sounds amazing. I would love to see some pics. I t may help the home owner with landscaping ideas.
Thanks

Here's some photos.....
Something is amiss...no window to attach ever arrives!
Help, please!
I used to be able to do this, what has happened?

Turned off...as usual when posting.
Maybe a glitch from yesterday....ought to try again!

Again.....posting pics!
Both the Pop-up and Ad blocker must be off.

Would the chemicals from the pool hurt the wood? If that is a problem them minimise the exposure.
Also, when people get in and out of the pool wood might give them splinters. Maybe a smooth surface would be better.
The combination of wood exposed to pool chemicals and swimmers saftey would be two of my concerns.
Chemicals won't be an issue as the pool will be using a salt water system.

You may also want to consider how pool and rain water dripping from ACQ is going to effect the painted metal pool cap and frame. (if ACQ is under consideration for material)
Regards Rich
ACQ and aluminum do not mix!
ACQ and steel do not mix!
Massive CORROSION!!!!!!!
Pull one of those little tags of the end of a treated lumber.
Read the fine print on the backside! Try a B/T search for ACQ.

Thank you, I am aware of that. The deck wouldn't be touching the pool.
Dave
The pool has an entirely plastic cap and the pool itself is painted stainless steel. Shouldn't be a problem.
