What with $100 12-2 NM and gas at $3.09 here, etc. should have expected it.
Went to exchange 130 cu ft acetylene cylinder, price was $66. OUCH!! If you need it ya gotta pay. Gotta concentrate on using propne-O2 when possible.
Oxy was still under $25 for 150 cu ft. exchange, but that’s just ‘air’
Replies
Me, I'm stuck with the miniature tanks, and the oxy costs four times what the acetylene or MAPP does. That ain't just 'air'....
I'm still sweating joints with plain propane as a result. Not a big problem for ½", but for ¾" and up, it's a drag. A lot of the guys have upgraded to MAPP or use mini o/a sets like mine on rigid copper drains (required for commercial around here). I don't do commercial, so it's real rare I have to sweat anything over ¾". I just use the acetylene rig for brazing and light cutting.
I've thought about getting a MAPP setup for sweating pipe. Torch head is about $40; a 16oz cylinder of MAPP gas is about 8 bucks. Or at least it was last time I checked....

Go for the Mapp...you want one of those self igniting torches anyway ;-)
Worse yet, I want the one with the hose ($$$)....Dinosaur

Nope, only plumbers are allowed to have those, dont'cha know.
Funny, I've got the same baby oxy-acetylene rig you do....haven't bought gas in a long while. Don't use it often, but sure like having it when needed,
Seriously, bought a Mapp gas & piezo light head few years back....you couldn't pay me to do propane now.
Do they make the hose rigs w/ ignitors?

Sez who?? (Nahhh...don't tell me; it'll just send me off on another rant....)

View Image Doesn't look like it; that's the one I've been wanting but no trigger. (Part of the reason I didn't buy it yet, too.) Seems to me they also could have put the valve on the handle if they wanted to make life easier for the user. IIRC this rig costs about $70.Dinosaur

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't some sort of code or law that requries the valve to be within a certain distance of the source, for leaks and such.

On full-sized brazing sets, there's always a pressure-regulator valve on each tank, and a control valve on the handle for both gasses. For a DIY torch like that Bernzomatic hose-job, they could have put a ball-valve right at the tank to meet any such regulatory requirement, and then put the control valve up at the handle. (You don't need a regulator when you're dealing with those happy-homemaker-sized 16-oz throw-away tanks. There's not enough pressure in 'em to blow yer nose.)

We use Sievert with soldering irons on the tip, but skip the iron and just use the handle..with gas valve on the handle, and an ingniter.

That thing run off a 20lb (bbq) tank? Propane or MAPP?Dinosaur
How now, Mighty Sauron, that thou art not broughtlow by this? For thine evil pales before that whichfoolish men call Justice....
I /we mostly use 16 oz propane, plenty for our soldering needs with the large copper "iron" actually it is a true copper tip. But that is for joining sheets and not pipes.
It can run on mapp, when I ran out of propane not tooo long ago, that works fine. With the right fitting ( easy I have one for a small heater) any size tank will supply it.
When we do large flat seams, tho' we break out the brazier and individual coppers, they stay hotter longer and reheat real fast. The gas torches can be heat robbed fairly quick if you have a LOT of seam.

Is that a promise or a thrreat? (G)
Watch slammin those "homeowner" 16 oz tanks...they are the best for us, kinda hard to hang on to the torch with a 20lb cylinder hanging off the roof..but I'll try anything once, twice if I like it and 3 times if I survive.

It's a premise.
Yah, I use the 16-ozers too; some of the places I've talked myself into plumbing I'd need 50' of hose if I had a 20lb tank.
When I slammed the little tanks I was thinking of the oxy/acetylene set, 'cuz I want da big ones just like da big boyz...but I can't justify the cost for the number of times per year I actually need a full-size brazing/cutting torch.
Best price I've seen for decent quality on a set of regulators, hoses, handles & tips is around $400; I don't remember how much a pair of portable tanks to go with that cost.
But then we're back to what Junkhound was bitchin' about when he started this thread: How much is gas costin' these days?
Talk about hijacking a guy's thread; he ain't been back since post 1.

No problem.
Oxy-propane does for about 95% of my needs, only need oxy acet for welding copper or cutting steel over 1" thick.
BTW, have not 'bought' propane for about 5 years, keep picking up 'old style' propane tanks 1/4 to 1/2 full for free at garage sales.
Got a LOT of extra air cylinders. (before the safety lectures, proceedure is to fill with water, flush, then pull 400 micron vacuum overnight, paint yellow or grey with yellow top)
You've got a better vaccuum pump than I do, LOL....

I was goofing around yesterday and I couldn't get any thing small enough to show you the picture of that page 13. So I tried again, lets see what shows up.
Yea that's better, it's the setup on the top left. Now it's not real readable but you get the idea.
That's nice. Thanks for doodling that page down to size for us dialuppers.

I have a piezo MAPP torch that looks like a pistol with a hose. I got it about 15 years ago at a hardware store, IIRC. I think it's just a Bernzomatic. It couldn't have been too expensive, or I wouldn't have bought it! ;-)
Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PA
That thought crossed my path too. I looked and looked for a hose rig mapp set with piazo (trigger ignition) and couldn't find one to save my life. It seems like it would be the best of both worlds as far as conviance, portability and just plain all out cool. I've got the the trigger ignition mapp torch head but no way to rig a hose set to it. I was thinking of something along the lines of a motor home supply set up, or rearrangement of same, that might work but, again, nada! Probably end up blowing my a-- to hell and back in the process though. It would seem to be a better rig to get into tight places, much better than having that clumsy tank attached to the torch and all.
Look back up thread, the turbo torch has all that stuff.
I sent the site to Dinosaur.
