Stopped to look at a truck today. 1999 F350 XL 4wd, dually, Knaphede service body, 99,000 miles, v10 auto. Listed for $11,900. I could probably have it out the door with tax, license, everything for $10,000.
I’d buy it in a second if it were a v8 gas, or diesel. I’m just concerned about the gas mileage of the v10.
Opinions?

I have heard they suck gas like crazy and are not very powerful for it.

I used to drive a '99 F450 dually V10 that got 6-7 mpg if I recall. The 350 should do a little better.
Yeah, V10's are big drinkers!
My BIL had one in a Lincoln Navigator, I think he got about 8 mpg on average
Dustin,
I have a 2000 f350 4x4 dually dump truck, with the v-10. I get about 9 or 10. A little better on the highway. Thing is, I get that pretty much with it loaded, or pulling my 7000 lb trailer. Doesn't seem to change much, until I put on the plow. Then the mileage plummits.
I've had it about 2 1/2 years, and put on about 35k miles. So far it's a great truck.

Thought you were a van guy Dustin? That's a lot of truck for a trimmer. ;) My buddy had the V10 w/ a regular pickup bed. He averaged around 9 or 10 and never had much of a load in it. The sucker screwed though. Fastest truck I've ever driven. Not what you wanted to hear, but that's what I remember most about it.
He bought it to pull his trailer for his sprinkler company but ended up trading it in for a diesel after just a year because of the gas issue. He did a lot of miles though.
Check out the boxes real close on that Knapaheide body. The doors have exposed piano hinges that tend to rust out before the rest of the body.

I'll probably keep the van. I have a bad habit of collecting vehicles. I already own 5, so what's one more right?
My goal for the summer is to get into 100% retail business. No subbing. So I'm trying to find a combination of vehicles to compliment that. My dump isn't going to cut it as an everyday ride, and the van isn't practical for hauling trash.
I'm probably going to buy a 6x10 enclosed trailer to haul most of my tools. Also, with a trailer I can mount my metal brake permanently inside. The brake is an everyday tool for replacing doors/windows, which will more than likely be my big moneymaker.
Or, I might just say f it and go work at Wal-mart. If you have any poo, fling it now.
I could see you now, " Hi, welcome to Wal-Mart, get your own damn cart"
dude, what's up with Timlin?
That's two games he gave up the lead. If you have any poo, fling it now.
Thats ironic, my 99 f-350 diesel got flat-bedded after it crapped out today. probably the fuel pump this time. I think the next truck will be GM
The motor still runs strong but I replaced everything else from bumper to bumper, some things several times
I just about talked myself into it, but now you have me second guessing.
I'm going to go over it tomorrow evening, and see what it looks like from underneath. If you have any poo, fling it now.
Dustin,I had a 2001 E-450 with a 12' Knapheide van body on it, V10 gasser. 6 mpg in town, 9 on the highway. Empty weight was ~8500 lbs. Chevy 350 V8's got about 10 city under same chassis/body combination, I was told.Big thirst, big money spent. Never again!Bill
That's pretty much what I decided.
For $3 a gallon, I'm going to wait for another deal to come along. If you have any poo, fling it now.
check that the oil pan is not leaking. I dont know about the V-10 but the deisel is having major issues and a recall should be coming. Its a 2 grand fix at the dealer

Just looked at new trucks.
Offered a brand new 2006 Ford F350 diesel single rear axle XLT xtended cab with 6' bed for $27,100. That included the 5 speed auto tranny and the tow package with the built in controller. $2800 back from Ford.
The Chevy 2500 with duramax and allison tranny and similiar trim is ~$35K. $500 incentive i think it was from GM.
GM is much quieter and I think a better truck but $8K is a lot of coin to pass up.
If I was a Ford guy I'd jump at the diesel in a heart beat.
