We are shortly going to be installing 5 1/2″ to 8 1/2″ antique white oak flooring over underlayment and are wondering about gluing it down in addition to regular nailing to prevent noise/movement. The material is KD to 8%. Is this advisable, and if so, what sort of adhesive might be best?

I guess I'm up early, so I'll respond before others here, but I think most will say it's not a good idea to glue the flooring because it needs to move (expand and contract, especially across the width of the boards) with seasonal changes in humidity. If you glue it, it may crack. For noise reduction, maybe put rosin paper or roofing felt under it. I would probably use two layers of rosin paper so things slide and don't creak, but I'm no flooring expert.
That is fairly wide flooring for normal edge nailing. If you do not face nail/screw/bung, I might think about gluing. Tjhere are places it can be good to do and this might be one of them, though wood that dry is less likely to need it. If yiou do glue it down, use bostik made for wood floors. It will suck it down and still alow some minor movement.

Excellence is its own reward!
specs for oak is edge nailing plus glue on stock over 5" wide bostik is good stuff but expensive; wear a mask, it's nasty or use 1/4" stripes of a good quality subfloor adhesive under ea course skip the rosin paper as you want bond to subfloor pre-install cleanup should be sweeping, then vacuum subfloor for best glue up
Thank you for your informative post. You refer to a spec. for oak flooring - is there some standard that exists that I might find for future reference? Where might I find it? Thanks.
do a search on... nofma it's the oak floor mfg. assoc., and links off that site you'll have to sift thru for specs the glue will keep floor quiet, prevent cupping spare a couple weeks for it to acclimate in house floor, will look better set stock on floor level it is to be installed in ur balancing out moisture content of flooring w that of the subfloor different levels, i.e. 1st flr over basement, has different moisture content than 2nd flr antique w. oak looks sharp
if you want to bring out that antique flooring put on a coat of neutral/natural stain to show grain and color park job next day for complete drying of stain, 1st coat poly on 3rd day duraseal #210 neutral is nice product; commercial line from minwax, although all the wood stain mfg. have a neutral/natural
