I am installing a Kohler apron front sink and am building the base for the sink. The installation instructions require a support that will support 300 pounds. I am thinking of using a 3/4″ plywood support (17″x25″) supported on each side by 2″ wide strips of 3/4″ plywood running horizontally front to back. The strips will be attached to the sides of the cabinet. Will this support 300 pounds? Do anyone have any experience with apron front sinks?

I'm trying to get a picture of this in my head, and just can't quite.
Is the 17x25 piece a vertical piece, or does it lay flat under the sink ? Is it part of a cabinet, or is it extra support inside a cabinet ?
*If you can picture a base cabinet with a shelf in it. The sink will sit on the shelf..but the shelf has to support 300#. I think what I am going to do is to add a second "side wall" to the sides of the cabinet under the sink. This way I will have a full 3/4" supporting the shelf on each side..not just the dado where the shelf attaches to the sides of the cabinet.
*You have to frame a cradle of 2bys. forget about under sink cabs, maybee a curtain or cut down doors. those sinks are heavy. check the finished hight of the counter first
*Never having installed one of that style I'd ask the Kohler people. What part of the sink is designed to be supported? If it's the bottom, then a shelf or some legs are in order; if it's the sides, then the support should be there, such as the one piece side walls of the cabinet, with solid spacers between the countertop and cabinet, if there is a space.
*They did it here. Maybe drop them an email.http://www.decoradvice.com/portfolio2000july.htmAnd here.http://detnews.com/homestyl/0009/02/lede/lede.htmOr, you could do like I did and go to the Kohler site and do a search.Kohler homesite... http://www.kohlerco.com/You end up on a site called kallistainc, (Kallista is Kohlers' name for their apron front sinks. Man, those things are expensive.) and just take a look at some of the sinks' technical information. Such as these simple drawings of the sink's dimensions...http://www2.kallistainc.com/pdf/l20298.pdfFor the Kohler double sink, and this...http://www2.kallistainc.com/pdf/l20299.pdfFor the single sink. Here is a picture of a Kallista, (Kohler), apron front sink that has been set, and the cabinet work done...http://www2.kallistainc.com/jpg/ks000074.jpgAnd another pic. This one is of both types of sinks just sitting on their sides...http://www2.kallistainc.com/jpg/ks000070.jpgJudging by these pictures and the technical sheets, it looks to me like what you're going have to do is to build a good solid frame of 2x materials, (2x2's, 2x4's whatever...), to sit the sink on... and then cut the cabinet to fit around/over/in front of it after the sink is set. There is no way that I would want that thing sitting in my kitchen on some flimsy 3/4 inch plywood shelf suppported on the sides with a couple more pieces of 3/4 ply...
*They are usually called farmhouse sinks.A search on this topic will help get you some pictures. The sinks are from England originally,I believe..
*Just set my slate tops in my personal kitchen tonightI have a Kohler sink and I installed a dadoed shelf in the base cabinet when I built it and also built the base with a double sides. This way the sink rest on the edge of the inside side. You have to remember, the sink is heavy, but add a garabe disp., pots, and water you get a big load quickly. Good luckDavid
