We’re replacing a 40+ yr old roof with crumbling 3-tab shingles. (Location = VT) The roofer generally uses either BP or IKO archetectural shingles which are in stock at our local lumber yards. He’s willing to use any other brand I specify if the cost is in the same range. My brother in law is a Florida contractor and uses GAF or Owens Corning. My thought is to go with whatever my local lumber yards recommend, but I’m reading bad stuff about BP. Any recommendations would be welcomed.

Stay away from Certainteed -- their warranties are worthless, and their managment is clueless.
If you got 40 years out of basic 3 tab you have great prospects. I'd buy what the locals sell, probably. Warranties on shingles are pretty worthless but their time span MAY be an indicator.
I've never seen any first quality shingle failures [odometer turned 40 years as carp/woodworker] but even if a manufacturer had a bad product it would be years before it emerged, by then they likely fixed it.
Some times you just pays your money and takes your chances, in this case I'd say no worries.

Certainteed continued to sell their line of defective shingles for a good 10 years after the first ones failed. Like I said, their management is clueless.
