"architectural salvage" (albany OR troy OR pittsfield OR springfield OR pownal OR rutland)
Vermont Salvage in White River Junction. Not exactly southern VT, butwe've found some okay stuff there.
Or the sister place in Manchester, NH

I am becoming increasingly worried that there isn't enough anxiety in my life
There used to be a great one in Burlington VT - don't recall name, don't know if they are still open ...

I havent been there myself (I am also in SS) - but I have a friend working on a reno on the eastside that has picked up a bunch of stuff from there. He picked up a bunch of nice oak doors for about 35 each - they were from an apartment so they all matched. There is also a place in Hudson that he found some nice stuff. I will try to get the name of it for you.

The Historic Albany Foundation is quite good. I've been there a couple times. They've got all sorts of stuff appropriate to older homes in this area. Everything from tubs and sinks to doors and trim. The place in Hudson (the name of which also slips my mind) is also very good but if I recall it's pricier -- no doubt because it's just that much closer to NYC and so picking up more of that trafic. If I recall correctly they had a really cool collection of ornamental iron work and some really huge columns and such. There's a place in Troy -- right along River Street -- that carries smaller stuff (bathroom fixtures, doorknobs, pulls, fireplaces, etc).
Good luck,
