Are plumbing faucets a cheeper grade at?

| Posted in General Discussion on November 20, 2004 07:38am

Sorry my title was too long.  Any truth with what my plumber is telling me? Faucets etc are a cheeper grade from HomeDepot etc.  Same brand and style but different where it counts(in the middle).  They sure are a better price!

    Yes

Thanks for the answer.  I just need to tell the future homeowners the cons of trying to save a buck.  Then the darn thing breaks and the plumber charges to remove and install the owner provided junk. So now you've lost money.

I see your new here, welcome.

This has been talked about on here several times, if I knew how to do it myself I would explain to you how to do a search on a particular subject and you would probably find several threads about this.

But it is true, same goes for some electrical, tools and a whole host of other products.

Some of the made in China valve are so thin, I literally broke off the collar trying to tighten a gate valve by hand enough so it didn't leak, lots of water all over.

Won't buy another thin cheapo myself, notwithstanding breaktime 'handle'.

        Hmm,

Bet you didn't use the Communist "collar gate valve wrench" did you?

I've installed a faucet bought by a customer...bought at HD...mostly all plastic parts inside.

Bought the exact same faucet for my house at my plumbing supply house and all the guts are brass and copper.

    I also see some Kohler

toilets at HD that say" on them "made for HD.

    Does that answer your question?

    Welcome to Breaktime

    Be well

This has to be total bullcrap.  You take pictures of these allegedly 'identical' faucets that were different?

I'll be trimming out some plumbing after the 1st of the year and I will damn well be buying 'identical' faucets from home depot and my local plumbing supply.  Me thinks I'll dismantle right there in the plumbing supply store and see what is going on.  I'll be totally objective, heck I'll even post pictures right here.

How about a place like plumbingsupply.com -- what side do they fall into?

          MERC.

          1. andybuildz | Nov 24, 2004 04:00pm | #16

I didnt need to take the faucets apart....First of all the feed tubes from HD were plastic tubing and the one I got from my supply house was copper.
The threaded parts from HD were plastic and the one from the supply house was copper or brass.
You think I'm making that up? I have no stocks in either company so....
And as I said....there have been signs up at my local HD that says right under the toilet on display, "made for HD".....you think that means they were made better....lol?I do have to say though...at Home Depot Expo the faucts and toilets do seem better than at the local HD supply boxes but if you notice its quite a bit more expensive at HD Expo.I bought a toilet at Expo with the flusher on TOP of the tank....the flusher rod was an extra (aint that like buying a car where the tires are extra)?
The toliet seat with chrome hinges were a fortune....sure looks good though....also was a 4 week wait to get the stuff.
            Be well

Then it is not "the exact same faucet".

          3. NormKerr | Nov 24, 2004 08:12pm | #18

posters keep going around in circles here:"they are different, I have parts to prove it""they are the same, my BIL told me"the fact is that this is done ALL the time.
And it is very possible that NO they are NOT the same part.
Look closely at the box, if they are different there will be a difference in the part number and/or the UPC (the number near the bar code). The advertising on the box might be very similar/same but if the UPC is different, or the model number by the maker is different, then it IS different in some way.Plumbing fixtures are nothing new to this. Hyundai makes cars for GM and you can buy a GM one or a Hyundai one. There will be differences based on each seller's own specifications.Norm

Then it is not "the exact same faucet".>>>>>Oiy vey....WHEN YOU LOOK AT WHAT GOES ON TOP OF THE FRIGGIN" SINK IT LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME! SAME BRAND AND SAME EXACT OUTTER FAUCET.
As I said...its not the same innards!!! So youre right its not the same faucet. OK ya happy now? lolThe secret of Zen in two words is, "Not always so"!

Not to hijack this thread, but, I've heard that the huge retailers, i.e. Home Depot, WalMart etc, put such price pressure on their suppliers that even name brand companies will often produce a different product depending on who they're selling it to.

The guy who told me this was a textile salesman, and he said that, for instance, the three-packs of underwear that Haynes makes for WalMart don't have the same quality of cotton that the Haynes three-packs have for a slightly higher-end store.

What's a lowly consumer to do other than to rely on the old advice, " You (usually) get what you pay for!"

I didn't want to start WW3.  I think that enough folks have seen the difference.  The online plumbing supply is still up for question.  Does anybody have an online supply that they have used and liked?

p.s. I love this forum. Have only been on for about a week and have found a lot of of helpful info.  Thanks to all!!!!
