I am have recently finished remolding an older home in New Jersey and now am lokking at purcashing another older home. The only real problem with the new home is that it has an asbestos roof. I have shingled many new homes , but have always stayed away from older asbestos roofs. What are my options with this roof, it does not leak but is badly stained. Can I remove them myself in New Jersey? Can I place steel roof over top(too much weigth?) Can I shingle over top? What can I do? Any suggestions would be great.

Call the state- they have a department that deals with asbestos abatement, if NJ is anything like Wisconsin.
I've been both places. New Jersey is nothing like Wisconsin. (Not that either can brag about that.)

I called the DNR and they have someone specifically for answering questions about this kind of thing.
"I cut this piece four times and it's still too short."
Yeah, and in NJ the response is "If we told you we'd have to kill you".

Don't know about NJ, but you can in KY. Disposal is another issue. The first step I would take is to get a sample and have it tested. The percentage of asbestos may effect the procedure for getting rid of them.
I would not try to install another layer of anything on top of them. I'd also check to see if the asbestos is covering another layer of roofing. Every asbestos roof I've encountered in my neck of the woods has cedar shingles under the asbestos.

I know that in south jersey, (gloucester county to be exact) you can dispose of asbestos siding and shingles at the county solid waste complex just as long as it is double bagged, and you declare it. So I'm assuming that means if you get it off the roof with out anyone harassing you, they take it off you hands for a fee.
