I met with a customer yesterday who needs to replace several asbestos shingles on his 30’s era bungalow. He knows that they’ve been illegal for many years and that there will be abatement issues with removal of the old shingles.
He told me that another part of the house had been reshingled a few years ago with non-asbestos replicas but had no idea of where they came from.
Does anyone know of a source for non asbestos replica shingles? I’ve never seen them and the last time I saw asbestos shingling was in the mid-50’s when I was in grade school – lol.
Thanks

James-Hardie products (fiber cement siding products) makes a fiber cement replacement, and you can order the shingles anywhere that sells Hardie products.
Also, a company called Sutherland Lumber Company sells a fiberglass replica.
I have used both, and they look great.

Give me the size of what you need. I have some unused in the crawl space that might work.... I'm not too far away and mine are from 1930's.
Also have 32 squares on the roof that you are welcome to have, just come and get them (all) ;~)
Abating them is not the problem(sort of). If your not a licensed Ca. contractor, it's a piece of cake. Home owners can do it. I called my local refuse comany and they will deliver a 20yrd container and all I have to do is "burrito wrap" the container and seal when done with visquine and duct tape. The additional processing charg is around $300
I was in the crawspace this a.m.and measured the tiles. They are 17"x17" and there are probably about 3 dozen or so. Color is a greyish with metalic speckels. Seams to have some color blotches ground into them. They also seem to be easily stained to match the old. I cold probaby steal a few clips off my roof since we are doing the tear off in the next month.
let me know if you want some and I'll send them. I'm near Chico.

No thanks, Migrane. I already passed this job on to a friend who has a guy who does those old asbestos siding shingles. Apparently there are sources for replicas.
Thanks anyway.
