I observed a roofing crew last week as they were just getting started nailing shingles on a roof.
They were putting a layer of asphalt heritage shingles over an existing layer of three tab asphalt shingles.
The way they were doing it was two guys were installing shingles with air powered guns.
A helper was in between the two and his job was to open each bundle of shingles, remove the clear plastic strip from the back of each shingle, and then hand the shingles one by one to each installer.
I’m certainly no expert but I do not think it is necessary to remove the clear strip of plastic from the back of each single prior to installation.
Am I wrong? Is there a reason to go ahead and remove the strip of plastic?

Not a roofer, but I have a downtime day today and way too much coffee already so I'm going to chime in. Follow shingle maker's instructions, without deviation and you will be a happy guy.

If I remember correctly the stripis there to keep the shingles from sticking to each other in the wrapper. I worked as a roofer for 8 years and never peeled em.
'BPS' is correct - the strips keep the glue tabs from fusing the bundle of shingles together in transit/storage. Once installed, the glue tabs only align with the shingle below (not the cellophane strip) and are activated by the sun to seal the tabs down.
Removing them sounds like a giant waste of time that only makes more trash to blow into the neighbor's yards.
Certainteed has code # on the plastic strip that helps them date the shingles in warranty cases. It says do not remove right on the plastic strip.
I'm right?.. Please no tell my wife orm I willnever hear the end of it:)
Actually if I tell her I'll be able to mark the calender and celebrate it next year!

I always laugh out loud when I see or hear of some novice wasting his time doing this

There are some hip and ridge shingles that you have to remove the strips from (PITA), but from your description that probably wasn't what you were seeing.
