Attaching a cantilevered pergola post to an existing deck railing post
Hello, fellow FHB enthusiasts. I’m planning a cantilevered pergola attached to my existing deck.
The question is — what is the best way to attach the pergola posts to the existing deck support posts and rail posts?
Please view attached structural drawing. The pergola posts will be 4×6 redwood, 9′ high. The pergola posts will be sitting directly above the deck support posts and beam. They’ll be notched to attach to the deck railing posts, and I’m wondering about:
– carriage bolts?
– structural screws?
– PL Premium and nails/structural screws?

In the drawing, you can see the deck railing posts are attached to the deck support posts at the bottom with two carriage bolts (green )
The current plan is to attach the pergola posts using 3 carriage bolts through the (4×4) railing posts (pink)
Finally, at the upper right of drawing I’ve isolated the posts and beam structures for clarity (red is existing construction, pink is the new pergola post)
Hope this is not too confusing, and I really appreciate any insights here, thank you.

Note, attachment was greatly reduced in size. The link below will go to imgur, clicking the small image there will open up the large, original size version. Sorry about the hassle

Whose drawings are those? (Are they done by a design profession or you?) Deck rails are not built to take the load of a pergola. You will have significantly more load from a pergola than from a human leaning on a deck rail.
I suggest you get someone to design the loadpath for you.
Yeah, you're right. Thank you
