My house has cedar t&g siding installed vertically on the back and I lag bolted the deck to the house. Under the deck I have 2 sliding doors that allow me to enter my basement, in other words the deck is about 8 feet off the ground. I noticed some sag over one of the sliding doors and after poking around I discovered the plywood sheating behind the siding was rotted. Apparently water was running down the siding and pooling over the top of the door where the sheathing was absorbing it. I’m looking for some suggestions on how to stop this from happening. I took a water hose and ran some water on the deck up above the door to see where the water was entering and found that the water actually came through where the tongue and groove meet. Is this normal ? Did I make a mistake by attaching the deck directly to the house ? I didn’t use flashing because I never actually cut into my siding to attach the deck, I simply bolted it over top of the siding. Someone said to run caulking on top of the deck against the house to prevent the water from running in. I’m concerned that there is to much moisture between the deck joist and the siding and caulking it would seal in the moisture causing more problems. I would sure hate to have to take my entire deck apart to correct this problem. Thanks for your help.
