Am in the process of rehabilitating an masonry house built in 1884 and need advice on the best method for attaching drywall to the inside of the exterior walls. The walls were plastered originally but due to massive water problems many will have to be stripped clean.
Thickness of original plaster was nearly 3/4″ so I thought the best method would be 1/4″ furring strips glued and screwed to the walls then a vapor barrier then 1/2″ gypsum. As the mortar and bricks are very soft, I am concerned about moisture build up. The lath will also help me even out the walls. Am also unsure of the right type of screws or fasteners to use in this old brick.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi Bill
Tapcon screws will do the job.

I would recommend considering furring the walls with a galvanized metal stud system, or a product called "hat channel" which is basically a galvanized metal furring strip. Both can be sourced from any large drywall or building supply dealer. You will find the metal systems more stable than spruce wood furring when faced with humidity and moisture.
You should, however consider sealing the masonry on the inside with a waterproof coating before you go to the vapor barrier and drywall stage. Possibly you could pay the mason to parge the inside of the walls after the lath and plaster are stripped out. The less chance you have of the soft masonry outside wicking in to the walls, the better. Also consider using rigid foam insulation or a sprayed on urethane versus batt type insulation.
Let us know how you go with this.
good luck,
Jeff
