Did you get any new security software on your computer? Change any borwser settings lately? Something on your computer is blocking pop-ups. I tried it and it worked fine for me. Try using the spell checker. It spawns a new window in a similar maner.
Thanks, Matt. When I tried inserting a file to a different thread before posting my question above, I couldn't Spell Check. I tried that again, and the spell check worked, but I still can't attach files - nothing happens when I click "Attach Files." I turned off all security software - Norton Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam and Ad-Aware, but that didn't help. I haven't knowingly changed any browser settings.Gary W

Not sure what to tell you except that it has just about got to be a setting on your computer. To verify this, sign into your Breaktime account from another computer - computer at work or at a friends house - I bet it will work. If you think it could be a problem with your Gary_W sign in, make up a new one and try that - both on your computer and someone elses.
I'm guessing that a number of other people will have read your initial post by this time, and at least 1 or 2 would have responded if they were having similar problems.
If you want to tell us what op sys and browser you are using (including version numbers) someone could at least tell you that "it works on mine" or something similar.
Matt
Thanks again, Matt.
You're the only one who's responded.
I'm using Windows XP Professional v5.1 with SP-2, and MS Explorer v6.0.2900.2180 with SP-2.
I've had a new computer since February, but it seems to me I've posted with attached files since then. I can't remember changing any switches in my "Tools - Internet Options" settings, and I ran pretty much the same internet security and anti-spam software in my old computer. I'll try posting an attached-file message on that computer, but I'd like to know what switch to throw to post on this one. Surely there must be a common protocol, and someone out there must know the solution. SYSOP?

Turn off your pop-up blocker. So far, every time the problem has been that nothing happens when you push the button... the problem has been a pop-up blocker.

Jeff, you know if anyone makes a good Pop-Tart blocker??

How long are you waiting while "nothing happens?"
It doesn't show you anything during the upload, and large files can take some time.
Hi Bob,
When I click on "Attach Files," literally NOTHING happens - the Explorer flag doesn't even wave.
Can anyone tell me where I'd find and how I'd turn off anti-popup software?Gary W

Never mind, I found the Pop-up Blocker on the Tools menu. It's been turned off all along. Could there be another pop-up blocker software in my computer? I'm unaware of any.Gary W

It's possible you have aggressive spyware on your computer. There is spyware that will follow you around and pop up windows with advertising pertinent to the website you are visiting. It also blocks everyone else's popups and puts it's own in their place. It's possible that is what is happening here. The Prospero popup being blocked by the spyware, but the spyware unable to put up it's own popup. That's the only other explanation I can think of.It's probably something a lot more simple than that. But I would scan for spyware.

When you figure it out, let me know. I've had the same problem for a few months. Norton, pop-up blocker turned off, Windows XP. I don't have SP2, I had to remove it earlier due to complications.
Really, if you find out what's going on, shoot me a message, e-mail, anything.
I never met a tool I didn't like!
With SP2, you've got Windows pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer (Tools -->Pop-Up blocker --> Turn off pop-up blocker). I've noticed on some PC's that even after turning it off it still blocks it... but tells you it is (info bar below the address bar).
Your internet security program likely also has a pop-up blocker. Norton, Macafee, whatever the brand name is, there is probably a pop-up setting in there somewhere. Some times its hard to track down.

I have the same problem, click the button and it changes color to show it has been "clicked" but nothing happens. Hope you get an answer.
Any of you with the problem,Do you have javascript turned on or off ?
Are we there yet ?
Gary,
As Luka has pointed out the 2 main culprits are Pop up blockers and Javascript being turned off. Since you seem to have been able to determine that the pop up blockers are disabled then I would think it is Javascript. Is spell check currently working for you? This uses similar functionality so if that is working then there must be something else going on. Let me know. -M

Although I can't find a switch that turns on Javascript, I did go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and added check marks to Java Console and Java Logging, along with the checks that were on JIT and Use JRE (Java).
I can't find any operating pop-up blockers, but that doesn't mean there aren't any hidden somewhere. Explorer's blockers are turned off, and Norton is turned off.
As to Spell Check: when I replied here, and I'd not written a keystroke in the box, I clicked Spell Check, and it answered that nothing was here to spell check. Now when I attempt to check my spelling, NOTHING happens. Neither do I get a response when I click on Attach Files. The button moves, but nothing comes up, and Explorer's flag doesn't wave.
So I give up. Could SYSOP make Taunton's side of the program more compatible? It's nearly impossible to discuss any topics without being able to attach files. The hell with spell checking - who needs that?Gary W

So I give up. Could SYSOP make Taunton's side of the program more compatible?
Gary,
For the two or three who are having problems, there are literally tens of thousands using the very same software and having no problem.
Sysop cannot "make Taunton's side of the program more compatible". Partly because Sysop doesn't actually write the program. Partly because the problem is obviously on your own machine, and trying to make the program "more compatible" to address every possible problem on every computer out there, is basically impossible.
For example... In your case, the program would in essence, have to be able to scan your machine, find all the settings, make sure they are all correct, and then make sure that nothing else is interfering... To make sure that you were able to use the attachment button. It is unrealistic to expect this, and in fact would be eggregiously intrusive to the vast majority of people out there...
Make sure this forum, -and- prospero, are in your trusted sites list. Dump your cache. Delete your cookies. Reboot your computer and try again.
Have you even tried to scan for spyware yet ? Use a free online scanner. Use a free online scanner for anti-virus as well. Panda is good for that.
As I said, the problem has to be on your computer. If you can't fix it with the standard fixes, then it obviously has to be something unusual. Spyware that is trying to control the popups on your computer fits the description of "something unusual".
Whatever the problem, it is going to be found on your own computer. Not a 'compatibility problem' with the forum software program.
I know it's frustrating. But the bottom line here is that the machine is not smarter than you are. Nor can it read your mind and do what you want it to do, instead of what you tell it to do. Nor can anyone else 'esp' a fix to the problem.
You have a problem on your machine. You are going to have to roll up your sleeves and delve into the workings. You are going to have to go deeper into the whys and wherefores of the machine. You have got to install security software. Norton is a joke. And you have even that turned off, instead of figuring out how it could be a problem. Get a firewall. Get anti-spyware software. Get a good anti-virus like AVG. Get anti-trojan software. Etc.
The bottom line is that the box that is sitting near you, is your own responsibility. Expecting it to work will not make that happen. You don't buy a tablesaw and then expect it to cut all your wood for you. Nor do you even expect to be able to cut everthing you need to cut, without learning how to set the saw up for different cuts.
As frustrating as it is, as much time as you have alreay spent on the problem, it is obviously not enough. The problem is under your nose somewhere. You have to find it.
P.S. Turn off Java. It is a very high security risk, and it is not needed. Javascript does not need Java, to run. Turn off active-x as well. At this point I am almost convinced your computer has been compromised already, and that is the real root of your problem.

A quick question...Those of you having this problem...Are you on AOL ?
Are we there yet ?
Have you updated your forum profile lately? Please Do!
No, no AOL.
I have done all that you suggested months ago when it first happened, to no avail. I scan the machine weekly with updated anti-virus/spyware/ whateverelse, and long ago decided something in my software doesn't want me to add attachements to threads at BT. If I feel a desparate need to do so, I'll go to (one of the many) computers my kids are using and upload from there.
I fought a good fight, but caved in some time back. I'm hoping someone more intrepid (and knowledgable) discovers the problem on their machine on passes it on. Lazy, I suppose, but I've gotten tired of chasing cyberghosts.
But I thank you for always willing to lend a thought or suggestion.
I never met a tool I didn't like!
Nick,You're welcome.Always glad to help.I'm glad you found the problem.

Nick, along the lines of Luka's suggestions, doing an occasional search for spyware is always a good idea. If this link works, it should take you to c/net.com's download page for Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware is one of the programs we use to find spyware:
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
If the auto-update doesn't work, you can manually update the free version. I go to the program's help and search for "defintions", double-click "update the definition file" (on left side) and then under "Manual Update" (on right) click on the link "Lavasoft Website" that downloads the update file in zip form.
Unzip the file and copy it into:
C:Program FilesLavasoftAd-Aware SE Personal
It should prompt you to overwrite the old file. Click yes.

Thanks, Luka, I found the problem. I have Norton Anti-Spam running in Outlook, but that program isn't listed under All Programs. Neither did its pop-up blocker appear when I searched the computer for those evildoers. I didn't think to look in Outlook. Anyway, I opened the program and turned off both the pop-up and ad blockers. Now the Attach File function works.Gary W

Gary,
After reading I looked on my toolbar and found an icon for my security program, clicked on it and found it was blocking pop-ups. I toggled to allow ads and pop-ups left the site and returned and I can post now. Don't give up there is a solution.
Hot damn, I just figured it out. Open Norton Internet Security Center. On the left, click on the Anti-spam button to open anti-spam contents. In the Antispam features, turn off pop up blocker. You should be good to go. If you're using Norton and it's up to date.
