For my laundry tub, I have constructed a short drain line using a combination of 1 1/2″ PVC and ABS elbows and pipe. I could not find the right combination of street and regular elbows in either alone. I want to make it reasonably leakproof, so went to the local hardware store to get some combination ABS & PVC adhesive. Sorry, no such animal any longer in Calif. If I want to use the combo glue, I will have to go back up to Oregon and grab some out of my stash up there. What is the work around? Can I make a reasonably good drain line seal using silicon caulk or something similar? This is in the garage, so an occasional drip isn’t going to really hurt anything other than my pride…

Go back to the hardware store and check out their selection of rubber fittings.
You ought to get the right fittings/pipe, but anyway, I think you'll find the PVC glue does a heck of a job on ABS (too good).
In a pinch I once assembled some plastic pipe w PL. Put it together and then drove some pan heads screws through the fittings to hold it together (this was 6" pipe under about 40 psi). Do you know it did'nt even leak.
These techniques are NOT for pipe going behind DW.

The only type of PVC glue sold in this area is "low V.O.C.", so I really have no idea if it will work at all on ABS but I guess it is worth a shot. I already have a selection of the rubber/hose clamp fittings and there is not enough room to work with them.
Note that you can get an entire trap assembly in rubber.
In science it often happens that scientists say, "You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken," and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion. --Carl Sagan
