i was just interested in some various ways to attach posts and rails together. no fastners showing is ideal, but sometimes difficult without a plowed rail. any suggestions.

Not to sound rude or anything but you need to give more specifics to answer your question. Is it all wood, or composite? What's the rail design? Nobody will have any idea what you're asking until you fill in some informational gaps with your question.

Look for something called a Handrail Bolt , it's like a dowel , sort of . It's metal , usually about 1/4 to 5/16 dia. , maybe 3 1/2 in. long , 1/2 of it is wood threads 1/2 is machine threads . Usually comes in a kit that includes a wood plug .
