attaching wood cleats to a painted stone
I have a basement with painted stone and mortor. A fair amount of the paint is no longer adhering to the wall. I want to attach 5/4 x 3 spruce to the wall so that I can then attache 1/2 inch plywood. The plywood is to hang tools etc above a woork bench. I have previously used Tapcons but that was in a wall that had a 2 inch mortor coating. worked great. I am not that kean on the idea of drilling into the rock.
What sort of adhesive can I use that will stick the wood to the rock. Epoxy? Consturction adhesive?
Thanks

If you don't want to drill and paint doesn't stick(glue won't either), could you "hang" the cleats from the sill, joist or beam?

I would like to avoid drilling in the stone if possible. Or maybe I do not have the proper equipment. The paint has not been sticking because of hydrostatic preasure through the mortar. No water just vapor. And I can get the stone clean. So the question really is what would be quicker glue or drilling?

Quicker wouldn't be if all the stuff fell down. I would drill into the mortar joints if that made sense, the stone if that would work, but would really consider hanging the cleat.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

Easier to attach the plywood to flat studs, so you lose 1 1/2".
I'd attach the plywood to the workbench if possible, otherwise I'd hang it from the joists. Then I'd paint it a beautiful color to go with the stone walls. It's a wonderful thing!

Why not put a faux finish on the stone to make it look like plywood?
Don't you sell a kit at K-Mart to do that.

Thanks for being so observant Bill! I thought it might look good with a grass cloth covering, but your idea is much better! Would you like to be on my show?
