Need to add another layer of insulation in an old attic. Joists are only 6 inches and somewhat filled with fiberglass batts. It isn’t big enough for storage and doesn’t need a floor, but I want a catwalk for access. How do people usually build those? Just nail some vertical 2x stubs with maybe 2×6 on top and OSB for the walkway? Or is there a better way?

I filled the joist bay with batts, and then nailed 3/4 ply where I wanted the catwalk. The next layer of unfaced batts went down perpendicular to the joists. If I need to get in there to do work, it is trivial to pull back the top layer batt to expose the catwalk. To make the cellulose guys happy, you could put down 3 rows of batts where you have the catwalk, two to act as dams and the middle one to provide access to the catwalk, and then blow cells into the rest of the area.
I ran 2x4s on edge, perpendicular to the joists, then OSB for a walkway. The OSB is just tacked down enough to keep it from slipping, so it can be easily lifted for access under. Stuffed the area under with cellulose.
