Any solid ideas for venting at the ridge area of our house? The roof is three hips, at three different heights, and inadequate ridge to vent. I have read a lot of negatives about attic fans-not cost efficient to run, easily short circuited by other vents, can cause negative pressure inside the house, and I don’t want a mushroom farm on the roof. My primary goal is to cool the attic in the summer; there does not seem to be any humidity problem in the winter. Thanks-aj

Do you have soffit venting now ? I have seen ridge vents installed to steeper hips with no problems , but dont I like the look . Installing two Roof Fans on the back of your home , one with a fan and one without would work, creating a draft from one through the other. Unless you have the soffit venting then you only need the one .
*aj - A 1000-1500 cfm thermostatically-controlled attic fan should not cause too many problems if you have adequate soffit vents.Don't mix up ridge/soffit passive venting to avoid condensation with power-venting for summer cooling - they are different. The type of fan I refer to usually goes through the roof and is fairly ugly, although you can paint the cap to match. There are other ways to do this but the cost goes up.
*How about ridge vents on the sloping hip ridges ?They make special stuff for that situation, but I don't know much about it.
