As part of a remodel, I need to rewire the ceilng lights in a 1947 cottage. Curantly there are 5 lights and I plan add two more.
The wire is old cloth covered with no grounds. It runs under the ceiling joist, laying on the ceiling. I have found three staples so far, so removing it will be simple(cut and pull).
The wiring forms a loop from one fixture to the next around the attic. I thought of just recreating this but don’t love the idea of drilling holes through the joists and digging in all the insulation.
Instead I thought I would run along the ridge (where the attic light is) and branch off along the rafters towards the the new fixtures. Providing a 2×4 post where the wire will drop down to the ceiling. The ridge height is only 5 feet. and the space is not used for anything.
Having crawled around in a few attics (not sure why I always get that job?) I don’t recall ever seeing this done before.
I really like the Idea of most of the wiring being visable and all the Junction boxes being accesable.
Any thoughst???

The only disadvantage of your scheme is that you will need more wire and junction boxes.
That works
Wire and boxes I've got. Thanks
back bone with branches
Love the name! Thanks
or... use the old wire as a snake to pull the new wire through as you remove the old
Old wire location
Is part of the problem. It is just laying on the cieling and just hangs across the attic stairway.
