OK, got another question about my ’95 Dodge Ram pickup, this time about the automatic tranny.
You know the indicator on the column that shows what drive you’re in?
P
D
R
1
2
Well, just noticed today that mine is stuck on the D (drive), even when I put it in Park, Reverse etc.
Two questions actually: Can I fix this myself? Is this a warning sign that something else might go wrong with the shifting?
Just had the tranny rebuilt a little over a year ago.

Hey Joe, you got the wrong won! It's supposed to say,
P R N D 1 2
must be somebody put the letters in a bag and shjook them up and the N fell out the corner of the bag. It is still laying on the shop floor.

I thought you lived in snow country. Obviously he's got the snow plowing option on that truck. D to R in one step.
Maybe it's the oval track version where R means Race

There is a very old, un-PC joke about that. Goes in part: "I put it into 'loaf' first but was falling behind, then put it into 'drag' and I caught up with him. But when I put it into 'race' all he!! broke loose."

Not sure about the 95 model but in some you can put the key in the ignition and turn forward to accessory, then back to off.... do that 3 times in a row and then once more, then wait and it will ding a series of beeps, this is a code. Ther will be a pause in between beeps. Call an auto parts store and they can tell you what the problem is. Or i'm sure you can google it.
Don't know if that helps you much.

Never heard about that. I'll go give it a try, but I'm not sure if this is something a diagnostic could find, probably just being a loose something or other.http://www.woodsshop.com
Probably, but at least it doesn't cost to do it!My brain + his brawn = a perfect team
I believe that since he has a dodge, he first has to unplug one headlight. He also has to cover the rearview mirror with duct tape.Put a toad wearing a teddybear nighty on the dash. And hold 14 marbles in his mouth. If he doesn't hold the key in the off position for exactly 4.7369 seconds between the three turns, and the final turn, then he has to start all over again.Adding a marble each time he gets it wrong.
Yeh... That'll work.
yer bad!
Thank you.
Yeh... That'll work.
You forgot bungee cord to hold the tailgate on! Face the back of the truck while doing all of the above!
I take it you don't drive a dodge.
I have one but don't drive it cause it's broke down and has been for 2 years now.
I bought a Nissan Titan last time around, Bad azz little truck. Not practical for large jobs but fun as heck to race!

You caught me.I was going by memory from when I had a neighbor who drove a dodge. He eventually went nuts and was commissioned to paint the ceiling of the Bush presidential library. (Who woulda thunk it would take 7 years to paint a port-o-let roof ???)I believe the truck was sent to area 51 to be reverse engineered by the psychiatrict warfare team.
Yeh... That'll work.
7 years to paint Bush's port a let? Must have been repeated graffitti!

That's what I was thinking - 'cept I didn't know about the teddybear nightie.Just goes to show how much more mecchanical experience you have than I do.

Thanks Mr bill, that's what I was hoping to hear, not that I'd have to mess with the steering column, but that it wouldn't effect anything else.http://www.woodsshop.com
JW,
Only problem around this area is that they will not put the car or truck through emissions testing if it is not working :( Thats why I know how to fix it :)Bill Koustenis

Yeah, well I wouldn't expect anyone sporting an amish beard to have caught on to all the finer vaguearies of modern mechanicalismation...;o)
Yeh... That'll work.
Joe,
95 still probably has a mechanical indicator. There is a real small cable that pulls the indicator to the right as you move the gear shift. There is a spring to pull it back the other way. The cables break. Has no effect at all on the operation as long as you can figure out which gear you have it in properly. You have to take the steering column down to get to it if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I think many of that era used a push-pull cable like a lawnmower throttle cable. It's slightly possible that it's come loose on the tranny end and you can find and fix that. Otherwise it's probably one of those cases where you disassemble the entire dash, steering column, and left rear hubcap.
