I am planning a new home and would like to have stone counter tops in the kitchen. Can someone who has owned soapstone, granite, slate, or marble tell me what they think of these types of stone after a long term use in their homes? What needs to be done to maintain them? Do they stain? In what ways can they be damaged? I would like some honest feedback about the pros and cons of any of these. THANKS very much for your help!

Karla,
This question would be better posted over in the Cooks forum -- there have been discussions over there on the subject.
Of the materials that you mention, granite is the hardest and most impervious and is the only one I would consider apart from a very good grade of slate.
Keep away from anything that needs a protective coating.
