How do you get a B vent apart without damaging it?
I have to alter a Lennox vent and I just want to know that I don’t have to replace the entire thing. I’ll admit, I only gave it five seconds worth of a look but I’m a carpenter….not a Fireplace dude.

Practice. Get yourself a couple of other pieces and practice. It ain't easy.
you have to use a screwdriver or other implement of prying to slide in and pry the sheet metal hooks apart on the vent. pry and twist and bend and move, and then work your way around. it is practically impossible to do without denting and misshaping a little, but if you are careful it will still go back together just fine.
might want to do a little straightening before you put it back, and then seal it with self tapping sheet metal screws and the foil tape.
note the "B" vent is double wall to be able to come closer to combustible than single wall, you might not want any sheet metal screws in close proximity to a combustible.
Thanks gentlemen. I think I will be able to do the deal now that I know that there isn't really a trick to it. I'll probably just destroy the two parts that aren't needed anyways, and preserve the remaining parts by not prying at all on them. Hopefully, I'll be able to accomplish this without sheet metal screws. I'm pretty sure I can. In any event, the closest any joint will be to any wood is 12". Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
If you haven't yet here's a little help.
When you start if you use the handle of your hammer? I use a eastwing with the rubber around it. Tap all the way around it a couple of times. Tap tap rap rap but not hard enough to dimple it.
This give you a better chance at making it rotate. It frees up the crud that builds up and makes it feel like it's locked tight.
All the B vent I ever worked on were twist to lock. You put them together then twist ( I forget which way) about 2 inches and that enough to lock them together. To get a good grip( to unlock) you might have to wrap a leather belt around each section.

try this....rotate one piece till the seems line up, and it should align the tabs with the spaces .....I wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then
use a rubber mallet or a rubber handled hammer (use the hammer handle) and tap all the way around the joint... leaving dents is not allowed and will cause you problems....
two strap wrenches....
shock twist to unlock... bring up the tension.. and then give it a quick hard wrenching motion....
doesn't unlock...
repeat the sequence....

and if you can employ two mallets or hammers strike simotaneously while they are opposing each other...
