My house goes up for sale next week and we never installed the 4″ laminate splash. The Laminate tops are staying and we want to put a full height back splash with porcelain 6X6 tiles. The existing wall is plaster with a acrylic latex semi-gloss finish (Carefree paint distributed by Vista Paints). Can I put a good quality primer on the wall and just apply the tile to the wall or just apply the tile with mastic right over the paint and forget the primer??? Or, are there other steps that I should take? We don’t want to spend much money. We feel that the tile splash is better than the cheap looking laminate splash. Any suggestions? Please…

if the paint is in good shape, just tile right over it using wall tile adhesive
done lots with no problems
only tricky part is cutting for electrical outlets
You had to remind me of those electrical outlets, didn't you?
With 6x6 tiles maybe you can layout the tiles to simplify outlet cutouts. One way to cut them is with a round carbide coated saw blade that mounts in a standard hacksaw frame. Or rent a wet saw and layout so you're cutting a rectangle out of the corners.
The hacksaw idea (I think the blade is called a rod saw) works pretty well on softer wall tile.
Gluing to sound paint isn't a problem.
Good quality mastic.
no problem.
Depending on the wall tile....either a rotozip...or my tool of choice....a grinder with a diamond blade.....or.....lucky layout and a set of nippers.

Thank you all for your input. I think I'll go with a tile saw. This tile is as hard as a friggin rock. Plus, I'm going to try and talk the wife into tile saw. She's got me on tool restriction right now :-(
The little tablesaw type wet saws work well and cost less than $100. We have a big Target brand wet saw but just 2 days ago I broke out my Plasplug saw. I think it's fine for a diyer or a remodeler like me that does 1 or 2 tile jobs a year.
Mastic may pull the paint off the wall, you could try a spot and see what happens, or just prime with oil and be done with it.
Personally...if you care....screw some 1/4" cbu to the backsplash and then tile or.....my guess is that you don't wanna mica the back cause its a pain in the azz.
Worst case scenario is to dull the paint finish with a liquid deglosser and then tile with mastic.
And the Roto Zip flash works reall well.
Be rid of the place....lol
