I’m going to mount a basketball backboard on our garage wall. Plan to build one with plywood and some pt 1x or 2x backing or struts. The siding is clapboards.
Will I be ok if I bolt or lag through the lower ends of the clapboards and on through to studs or blocking? I don’t want to damage the clapboards, but also don’t want to cut out sections of the clapboards to create a flat surface, as is done for deck ledgers.
Thanks.

Get another piece of clapboard and secure it to the siding UPSIDE-DOWN. You will need to rip it down to match the width of the current exposure. This will give you a nice flat vertical surface to mount to. It will also distribute the pressure from the bolts (and rim hangers).
Bolt or screw (I would use lag screws) right through the clapboard and use caulk to prevent any water from getting into the walls.
