Side to side boom movement has developed a lot of slack (as in 2 FEET) .
May have to do with having used it to push over a 13 inch pine sideways >G<
Swing cylinders of the things have never torn down yet, am assuming I blew a cylinder seal or such. Teardown probably this weekend.
Suggestions, prior experience on this?

What year is the machine and how many hours on it. Ever done your pins and bushings?
'78 Ford 4500, pins and bushings done 2 years ago.
Pretty sure it's the hydraulics, the swing cylinders are about the only ones that have not gotten new hoses and seals if possible.
Art,
Probably not your cylinders. More likely leaking "cushioning valve".
You can check cyl. for leakage pretty easy and rule them out if not the problem.
I got a '78' 7500 with the same problem--- keeps everyone on their toes.
Let me know if you find a quick fix.... my ground crew would appreciate it.

Thanks, I'll check that valve out first, never torn one of those down or rebuit one, should be fun. Will let you know.
Are the other implements working ok? Could be a bad accumulator.
MichaelNew knowledge is priceless.
Used knowledge is even more valuable.
got the same hoe with the same problem
the cylinders seem very hard to get out and i have never been able to get a service manual on this machine (made by ford of england i am told)
Yep, know what you mean by no manuals. Spent 1/2 hour last night on the net and searching 3 different library catalogs for manuals on the hydraulic system, no luck.
When it gets warmer I'll tear it down and take pix of the fix, might be a couple of months though.
Check ebay for your manuals. I did a search for Ford 4500 and some popped up in the ebay stores. Around $130 I believe.

i just rebuilt all of my 909 backhoe attachment for my bobcat.... i know it's a toy compared to a real one.. but.... my swing cyl is like a rack & pinion (really 2 cyl in one one on each side)... i had to remove everything outboard from this... like brake'n the hoe in 2.... simple to replace the seals once done... went ahead and rebuilt every cyl while i had it apart... about $20 in parts per... maybe all the hoses next year...
rebuilding the cyl did correct a ton of over swing... not as tight as i'd like but went from 12-16" down to 3-4"... I believe i could close the clearance up between the teeth and help this ... I believe most of this induced over swing has to do with the bottom main swing pin... would take very little wear in this pin to cause it... I also believe old hyd hoses might play a small part, hoses act as a "safety shock absober" I've fixed soft hyd brake problems by replacing the soft hoses before... should be the same effect...
I'm lucky to have a really good hyd machine shop not far from me that stocks every seal known to man... i just take my old stuff in and walk out with a plastic bag full of new seals... i usually buy extras and keep em all with the manual in a large ziplock bag... it's saved me more than once... most cyl you can rebuild on the machine in minutes if you have the seals on hand...
