There is another problem with backups. If if you can recover the data can you use it.
The word processor or CAD program that generated the file 5-10 years ago might not be available or run under the new operation systems and the files are not compatible with new programs.
A lot of business and governments found this out with some of the Y2K upgrades.
*I almost had a heart attack when I noticed that Sonny was reading InformationWeek (a computer rag). Now I know the reat of the world must be finally going digital.
*Hey, Jerry, during my bath I read my latest mag that came in the mail today - "Business 2.0", combined with "eBusiness" magazine since they bought it out and combined the two into one magazine, and it's ll your fault. You made me sound and look like the dummy I was during our phone talks.OK, I'll never be a J. Hayes in computerese and e-commerce, but at least now I know what the hell you're talking about. Besides, new business opportunites now surface I never had an inkling about before. Mmmmm. Looking forward to September.Bill, forgot about that. Guess I'll have to keep an extra disk with the old OS and "downgraded" or is it "pre-upgraded" software.
*That's a good article, but it advocates something I don't...compressing your files on the back-up media. I would recommend that you always save the file as-is. Adding the compression is just one more step that can introduce file errors and is also one more file format that you may have trouble opening 5 years down the road...
