Backsplash Is In The Way

| Posted in Construction Techniques on January 11, 2004 10:25am

Try to condense this. I have an outlet set at the same height as the back splash in the new kitchen I have yet to finish. The knee wall( 40 1/2″ tall) gets a bar top. The only way I see getting this outlet out of the way is to raise the bar height. Will it be too tall if I add 3 to 4″, making it 43 or 44 1/2″? Can you get bar stools to match the added height? Thnks Bobby

The standard "bar" height is 42" and you can get stools for that.

You should be able to mount your recptacle horizontal in the space above a 36" counter top without any problems.

Maybe im missing something but seems like the best solution would be to move the outlet.

Yeah, code says (paraphrase) I have to be at least 4 ' from the the corner outlet in the kitchen. Thats not a quote. Moving it side to side wouldnt help anyways- Up and down aint an option either. Bobby

Eliminate the outlet if it is such a pita!

Never heard of a code saying outlets cant be WITHIN 4' of each other!!??

Maybe you need some clarification on the code here.Mr T

Do not try this at home!

"Can't be right. No code wood say that."

Well one codes does say that. No point more than 2ft from an outlet.

          http://www.codecheck.com/pg27_28electrical.html#rough

However, a peninsular or island counter top in only required to have ONE receptacle reguardless of how big it is.

And that can be mounted on the side/end of the cabinet, with in 12" of the countertop if the countertop does not overhang more than 6".

He also has the option of using a tombstone fixture.

But I don't know why he can't/won't use a horinzontal box in the backsplash. It is done all the time.

Bill, the way I interpert that is no point along counter GREATER than 24"...that means 48" on center no?..I may be wrong, I'm not one to dispute any thing , just that it seemed rediculous to me..thanx for the link..I am goin down that road myself, soon.

edit..ok I see the error in my logic..when he said 'bar' I am thinking another area..not attached to a 'counter'..my bad

" GREATER than 24"...that means 48" on center no?"

Yep, boy you people in KY are realy smart <G>.

Here is a link that explains why they did this.

            http://www.codecheck.com/schwan.htm

BTW, I am from Louisville and went to Speed (University of Louisville). When I went on one job interview as a senior they guy gave me a mini-quizz and then told me that he was leary of any school from the south because some of them weren't too good.

Very funny...I don't hail from here originally..SE Pa. then NC now here..But I can tell ya that I am one of the worse things on the planet..a redneck with an education..lol..so I cant use an extension cord that retracts above my island?..<G>..like a wind up air hose?

I have friend who is a commercial baker and he has an overhead pull down sprayer with REALLY hot water..over the 3 bay sink..way neat. Like a car wash for pots an pans. I would like to do something similar, my wife and I used to do small scale catering and may do it again in the future.  And yes, our kitchen was inspected in NC , by both dept. of Ag, and dept. of health..

Funny how the south has a bad rep. for schooling..some of the greatest minds I have known are "southern"..some folks are still fighten the "recent unpleasentness" as I have heard it called..lol

I still dont see a problem and screw the code if it says that . No ryme or reason .  You can have a dadgum junction of recepts if you want them . Lower the bar down where it goes. Geter done.

We made our raised bar height 46" to account for the outlets above the planned backsplash and really regret it as it is not a comfortable height for adults or kids.   We could have lowered it 3-4" as we eliminated the laminate backsplash and used bead board.  42"-43" would feel fine.

Well, the framing is at 40 1/2. Not sure how thick the countertop will be. Standard laminate top.  Cant move the outlet- will create a code issue. Thanks Bobby
