i am going to be installing bamboo stair treads on a stairway that was formerlycarpet. the treads come as the entire piece with the nosing and all.My question is, should I cut off the nosing of the existing treads and then lay the bamboo ones on top or should I remove the old treads and attatch the new ones directly to the stringers?
Thanks

since I haven't seen yours ...
"generally" ... the one piece treads go over the existing stairs ...
so ... cut off the nosing.
hit each overhang with a fat drill bit ... in the middle ....
and then zip to either side with the sawzaw.
what's going on with the stringer/skirt?
something new there ... wood ... or is the existing getting painted?
if painted ... I carefully zip thru the nosing flush against the stringer ...
then ... pop the little piece out of the routed "hole" and fill with a good wood filler ...
sand and fill again ... then paint.
what are the manufacturers installation instructions for installing the product?
they'd know better than I .....

this house was built in the early 60's and the stairs did not have a skirtboard the builders had slipped some ugly panelling between the stairs and the drywall, which I removed.I guess after I cut off the nosing I'll notchout a make-shift skirtboardwhich the new treads will butt to?
Are you installing a new floor at the bottom or top of the stair. By adding a new tread to an existing, you might increase the first rise and lower the last rise to unsafe or uncomfortable distance. If existing finish stairs you may need to remove the old treads. Since you're adding a skirt, not that big of a deal to hide your work.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

>"generally" ... the one piece treads go over the existing stairs ...The bamboo treads are 1 or 1 1/4. Wouldn't the thickness vs carpet throw off the top and bottom treads vs floor heights? (I know you said generally.) I'd think installation depended on what was under the carpet.
"The bamboo treads are 1 or 1 1/4.'
in that case .... it'd depend ....lile Cal said .... whats going on with the floors up and down ...
I had in mind the "one piece treads" that go with floating floors ... they match the "thin" thickness of the engineered flooring. That's why I said "generally" ... and also asked what the manufacturers said to do.
for 1 1/4 stuff ... I'd bet they intend it to be structural ...
that said ... I'd still check.
I've seen bamboo flooring and plyboo ply ... have a coupla samples around here somewhere .... haven't run across the treads yet ... hows the construction?
laminated over something I assume ....

Skirts arent a requirement. You can flush up to the wall.
Those treads must be beautiful... Im on a quest now.
>I've seen bamboo flooring and plyboo ply ... have a coupla samples around here somewhere .... haven't run across the treads yet ... hows the construction?Treads are just like the ply, but cut to size and nosed. Absolutely meant to be structural. In fact, be/c I have a spiral and winder, I'm just cutting my treads out of the ply. But I'm gluing them, be/c the substrate is metal and concrete.
