Barn Door Closure Details, FHB or FWW
I have seen recently details for a barn door closure/locking mechanism in FHB or FWW. It wasn’t the subject of the article – it was a sidebar or photo detail in the article. I think it was within the last 8 months, maybe up to a year. Does this ring any bells with anyone.
My new shop is half of a building – the other half is the 3 bay garage. The architect wants (and we do to) barn doors on the garage and to access the workshop. We do want some degree of thermal efficiency so a standard barn door with sweepers or brushes isn’t enough.
The article showed (if my memory isn’t too lousy) a gasket mechanism and a door closure mechanism that drew the door in against the wall. This system would help us – we have a minimum of 18″ overlap of the doors around the entire perimeter of the door openings.
Anybody have a better memory than I do?
Anyone have particular experience with efficient barn door design techniques?
Thanks

Welcome to Breaktime. Would ya fill out your profile so we know where you're from?
Around here virtually every lumberyard has barn door hardware. Among the hardware they have latches like this:

They pull the doors in tight. Forms a good seal and keeps them from banging in the wind.
.
This place has some gaskets:

Thanks - I filled out the profile - sorry for not doing that before. We have just started our building project, I've talked about that on here before.
I've got to start the thread that records our progress like Mike (Rhode Island) did a while back. On the to do list.

FHB #198, I think - Katie Hutchinson 'Designing Doors for Large Openings' -
someone tried to get a thread started about it here: http://forums.taunton.com/tp-breaktime/messages?msg=109807.1 but didn't generate any interest -
they do make cam latches that pull track doors tight - I can see using something like that with a gasketed opening and get a reasonable seal on shop doors -
Thanks - this is a good start. Mark
I've been thinking about this...............depending on how cold, cold is where you are.
I might be tempted to install a normal insulated garage door recessed behind the barn doors that you want.
In the warm weather you wouldn't even need to use the roll up.
Just a thought.

ya - I've considered using sliding doors to cover garage doors, kinda like storm shutters - I'd have them closed tonight - refurbishing the front of the barn this spring, it's likely I'll do just that - "there's enough for everyone"
great idea - and the architect thinks it's great too. Shows the value of another set of eyesmark
The only consideration I could think of was height or head room.
Post some pics when your done!
Eric
We have lots of head room - the garage side is open to the peak of the gable. I will post - we resume construction in March or April
i put8 x 9 garage doors on my barn when i built it
it allows me to drive my pickup through with a cap on it and i adjusted them to fit tight enough that i am able to heat it and use it as a shop & barn
