Basement window – with/without J-Channel
Hi –
I’ll be adding a double hung window to my basement and I am looking for ideas on how to finish the outside once the window is installed. I have never installed a window in a concrete wall so I would be interested in what other folks have done.
Some thoughts I have been batting around….
Purchase a window with or without J-Channel? Any benefits to having j-channel on a window when there is no siding running into it..?
Flashing done differently? Should I flash onto the concrete wall or just stick to the opening and the nailing flange?
Caulk options. What have folks used, silicon, etc..?
Any other ideas / input are welcome.
btw – I hired a pro to handle the concrete cutting since it is a solid wall.
Thanks
-Mike

Let's run this thru one more time.

I wrap the window RO with lumber, enough for a place for exterior trim after the window is installed. Usually 2-3, 2x4's around the window.
I like pure silicone behind the flanges, Geocel is also a good sealant. Then flex wrap over the flanges.
Cut a sill with a 10 degree bevel on it, then trim out your sides and top of the window. Try to keep the trim behind the outside edge of the concrete. That way you can seal the edges.
I like to wrap my trim with aluminum, but if you want to paint it thats fine as well.
No J-channel needed, like you said no siding is being installed.
Be sure that there are no point loads above the new opening, if there is then you will have to install a header behind your rim joist.
