Hi folks…
A friend has asked me about installing a small bathroom in what is essentially a closet area in an very old house. The floor framing is 2×4 at present. I’m comfortable that I can adequately increase the framing to give enough support but I’m thinking that standard toilets and shower stalls require more than 3 1/2″ of space to run drains. Are there fixtures that require less? Building up the floor probably wouldn’t be a viable solution in this case…
Thanks!
Paul

You might be able to do it for the shower, but no way with the toilet. About all you could do is use a wall-mount toilet that exits to the back (but they require a good, stiff mounting point, and I doubt you have that).
Thanks Dan... I've never installed a toilet with that set up, I'll look into it. Other than the mounting do they require any other special handling?

Go to a good plumbing supply showroom. I "think" that I have also seen floor mounted ones, but with a back discharge. Not sure, but it maybe another option to the wall hung.
